I remember the years when 70% of our list was western suburb footballers picked up from the FDL or VFA sides Sunshine, Yarraville and Williamstown.
Just wondering how many on our list are actually from the western suburbs nowadays, I know we can easily look up players where they are from but it’s harder now because they are usually named under the under 18 team, I just wonder how many actually grew up around the west..
Can anyone name any players who went to primary or high schools in the area?

Interesting thread ledge. I grew up in the east so a bit harder to answer this question. We have quite a few now playing for us from out my way.

I reckon Bubba Smith would have been the last real local boy (grew up walking distance fro the ground and came from a Footscray supporting family) to play for us.

Johnno I believe as well. I think he was originally from Hoppers Crossing.

Ryan Gardner worked at the Railway Hotel in Yarraville when he got drafted. That’s pretty legit.

The most local I can think of would be the father sons like Libba, Wallis and Hunter, and West but I can't be certain

But did they grow up in the West ?
Lachie Hunter I am guessing would be from out my way as I see his dad at Macs hotel (Melton) sometimes.
I think Wallis old man runs Car dealerships in Werribee and Essendon.
Apart from that I have no idea if they live or grew up in the West.
Seems the western suburbs is represented by a team that has no individual of the West.
But I guess we knew that would happen once the draft was introduced and zoning was abolished.
I find it quite amusing when you look at the last video of Johnno plugging stand by the West.

Steve Wallis originally came from Leongatha, Libba's folks live in Brunswick which is where he grew up. It's a fair walk from either of those places to Whitten Oval.

Bubba copped enough shit for going to a private Catholic secondary school, but now most of the boys are from private schools

Tony Liberatore grew up in Brunswick. I think Tom grew up in Essendon as that’s where Tony has lived for quite some time.

His parents ran a fishnchip shop near Werribee race track when he was at the bombers so yeah he would be a western suburbs boy.

I was speaking to one of the superstars that Serco hire to help the Australian government avoid it's responsibility to run a proper welfare system once and she tried to tell me how far Werribee was from Yarraville. "Are you looking on Google maps? Because if you are and you are making decisions on that basis then your name will be the first one I put down on the affidavit" the answer was "what's an affidavit?" I almost felt sorry for her until she realized that she hadn't given me her name (bad mistake on my part, that's the first thing i usually write down) and just hung up on me!

How far do you think it is? It is almost around the corner. Google is completely accurate as it uses GPS.

From Footscray? Maybe as the crow flies it's 9 ks but as I said I wouldn't want to walk it and I would easily walk 9 ks without breaking a sweat.

Not that greatest list of draftees from the Jets really (Rayner the exception).
They certainly pale in comparison to the cannons and the knights.

Cannons were created from the Western jets being such a strong zone so they split it.
Cannons have become the better side and zone now.
It’s seems hard to find any western suburbs kids being successful in footy now.
I think Lever was another.

A great thread and a topic i'd been thinking about for some time.
Does the under 18 teams even consider government school kids anymore? Is the character/talent of the private/catholic students so much better?
I know that's slightly off topic but with the huge population growth of kids here in the western suburbs, something is seriously awry with the lack of numbers on afl lists.

Same street as Rohan Smith. Around the corner from where Wally Donald lived and test cricketers Ken Eastwood and Les Joslin.
