The moment, the best, most courageous moment that caught your eye in today's game against Collingwood. Was it the moment that told you 'we've got this' or 'we lost this one right here'? Or was it the moment that you went 'wow....that is crazy courage.'

The lack of effort from the get go. The 'let's give a few things a go' mentality by the match committee.

May as well. To quote Keven Bloody Wilson, “it was over, before it began”.

When the group jogged onto the field with smiles on their faces.
Doesn't look like a group ready for battle.
I hope it was just someones smart comment about "Hey, no boos"
If it was they could repeat that comment jogging of the field.

Daicos crumbing goal late if there were countless others - just soft goals allowed summed up the defensive hopelessness of the night

The complete capitulation by English within the first 5 minutes.

Dude needs to take a shot of concrete or else he'll end up just being a good average player when he could be so much more.

Getting your arse handed to you by one of the best ruck man in the competition can be understandable but floating back into defense and not blocking the likes of their key forwards etc shows he hasn't quite grasped the concept of contributing in other areas yet.

Is anyone having some doubts about if English is the sort of player to become a top 3 ruck man in the competition?

Just 2 kicks of the footy in the game sort of counters that for me.
He should have been played in the Marsh games

Nope, as I said in another thread, there is probably only one other ruckman in the AFL that can beat Grundy. Grundy had 100 games more experience than English. English will only get better as he matures, still only 22 and we know the big guys take longer to develop. (not all of them, but the majority)

The fact that he didn't outperform when pitted against Mason Cox was a bit of a concern for me. He didn't beat him in marking contests when he was the extra either.
Long term I remain bullish about him being a good ruck man for us but he's got a long way to go at the moment and given our selection criteria he may not get some genuine support along the way. I hope we can work on rebuilding his confidence at last nights performance.

We can't have him as the sole ruckman in a team supported by Young, Bruce, or even Naughton. We must put Trengove in as the support and help Tim.

As for Cox, they were weren't up against each other too many times, so I am not worried about that.

Have for a while. None of the really good rucks have ever shown a complete inability to win hitouts even when they played early like Tim has.

I have no doubt he will be a very good midfielder for a ruckman, I just dont think he is actually going to be a good ruckman.

Lloyd shitting his pants when there was no one near him, mark that and goal it was game on.

Or Bont fumbling his first two efforts, if his mind is elsewhere what hope do mere mortals have.

That was unusual for Bont, he usually doesn't waste a possession.

That and the dropped mark Bulldog4life mentioned gave me a heads up we were in for a very ordinary night.
I've never seen such a performance from Marcus. I have a strong inclination to suspect we won't see such a performance from him like that in a long time. He is, as we know, a rare talent

The history with his goal kicking accuracy especially from set shots might suggest he has some work to do in that area. He isn't necessarily the efficient user of the ball we might given him credit for.

From SEN after the GWS game

The Western Bulldogs’ 2019 season is over, but they had a chance to go into half-time of the weekend's Elimination Final against GWS in front when Marcus Bontempelli had a set shot late in the second quarter.

He missed and it would be the last time the Dogs sniffed the lead, as the Giants blew them away in the second half en route to a 58-point victory.

Garry Lyon believes goal kicking is the flaw in Bontempelli’s game that holds him back.

“He missed that absolutely critical goal just before half time which would have put them in front,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“He’s had 53 shots at goal this year. He’s kicked 15 goals. Can you be a great player with that number?”

Bontempelli was tagged to 13 disposals by Matt de Boer in the loss and Lyon feels the Brownlow favourite needs to expect more of that next year.

“He is a super player. We know how good he is, he could win the Brownlow Medal. He’s going to have a summer of getting ready for that sort of physicality,” he said.

“If you play the Western Bulldogs in Round 1 next year, you’d be negligent if you don’t go and put physical time into Marcus Bontempelli.”

Select Trengove as ruck and English as CHF/2nd ruck. Let English perfect his talent sensibly.

Agree with this. Trengrove as he has proved is far more experienced and has proved to be capable to compete with the quality ruck men like Grundy. Trengrove is also a better key defender than Keath with 150 games with PA compared to Keath’s 50 games in 6 years with the Crows. English has the skill to play forward and used as a back up ruck man.

Why can't Trengove give us a dose of what Ben Hudson did to decent effect? With an ability to play back as required.

Otherwise WTF were we thinking recruiting him in the first place? As bait for Wingard?

On $400k+ per year, now out of favour despite having one of the better one on one % in the comp as a defender?

Maybe he's down on form but he hasn't had a look in and given Gardner's selection, we are obviously ok with playing a lockdown tall defender in the side (and Keath is not that).

He looked good in the practice game. It's not necessarily an issue with form.
I suspect he doesn't provide the run that Bevo wants

Players like Jackson who are out of contract at the end of the season and hugely out of favour are in a tough spot.

Edit : Maybe he signed for four.

For me the moment was the total lack of commitment and cohesion from the first bounce.

OK, now todays, left field, conspiracy theory number 1.

Did the match committee and the players have a prior inkling that this might be a one game season ? Obviously the idea may have been in most people's mind. Blind Freddy could see what was around the corner. Only (apparently) the AFL and NRL were oblivious to the world situation.

Something seemed amiss, and not just the spectators. The team effort was arguably the least committed I have seen a Bulldog team since the dark days of Royce Hart's coaching era.

Obviously I have no inside evidence of this, and its just an observation, just looking for an explanation for the team's apparent lack of interest and commitment.

Game highlight was the final siren sounding without a serious injury to any of our players.

my understanding of that era was ‘grit’ was the important thing. Skilful players were shown the door, and had good careers elsewhere (Brian Wilson). It was a long time ago but that is how I remember it.

We were sadly outgunned in the midfield where Collingwood were far superior. This would suggest that we need far more depth when our two standouts in both Bont and Dunks are down. Adding the likes of Maclean, Williams and Smith should assist plus the need for Trengrove to assist English in the ruck. Collingwood's skill level by foot and hand was also much better.

I honestly thought we could handle Collingwood but the energy levels were well down and we were well beaten in the coaches box.

Mitch Robinson said, when Brisbane ran out to no banner, no roar of the crowd, he felt like they were just playing a practise match. It didn't feel the same. I am not saying this is an excuse for us, but it must play a bit on players minds.

We know that a large percentage is always in their heads. Collingwood were definitely more geed up then us, and maybe that is an issue with coaching not revving them up as much.

It's the same issue for all teams. We didn't match the energy level of the opposition and Bevo struggled in ringing the changes that might have sparked us. We didn't pick our best side either in my opinion.

I don’t want to see English in the first ruck role for a few years. He could be a match winning centre half forward. Mobile, good mark and excellent kick. There’s a greater probability of him being a new Templeton than a Grundy in my opinion.

That's paying far more credit to whatever Royce was trying to do. I still don't think he knows what his end game was.

Wilson ran last in a time trial that the players were warned whoever came last was off the list. The speculation is that Wilson said "OK if that means I get to pick the club I go to then giddy up because I certainly don't want to play here" and deliberately ran last.

At one stage Braybrook underage teams had a centreline that included Doug Hawkins and Brian Wilson in it.
