I'm not 100% sure, Sydney would have a significant break compared to our 6 day break but I guess that is a small consideration in this disjointed season

I think we're a big chance, we match up well against Sydney and the SCG has been a happy hunting ground in recent times.

We really need Lloyd and Dale to provide more (or at least some!) defensive pressure so it's not pinging from our F50 and putting our defenders under pressure.

https://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/news/732808/four-things-to-watch-round-4

Four things to watch: Round 4
The key talking points ahead of Thursday night's clash with Sydney.

1. The midfield mix

Last year, the Western Bulldogs had the luxury of star-studded midfielders Marcus Bontempelli, Jack Macrae, Josh Dunkley and Lachie Hunter playing every game.
This week, they’ll be without two – with the injured Dunkley joining Hunter on the sidelines.
Sydney’s midfield, led by milestone man Josh Kennedy and the ultra-consistent Luke Parker, will present a tough challenge.
And how the Bulldogs adapt to life without Dunkley and Hunter will be critical.
All Australian on-baller Jack Macrae has spent time on the ball and on a wing in 2020, while the likes of Tom Liberatore, Mitch Wallis and the returning Pat Lipinski could be set for bigger midfield roles this week.

2. The English game

After a tough start to 2020 against some of the best in the business, emerging ruckman Tim English found his feet against the GWS Giants.
And he’ll be hoping to carry that momentum with him up to Sydney.
Similar to a fortnight ago against St Kilda, the 22-year-old will need to contend with a multi-ruck set-up at the SCG.
The Swans have recalled Sam Naismith to partner Callum Sinclair, with Hayden McLean also available to step in.
It looms as another big challenge for English, who the Bulldogs hope will have a big impact around the ground.

3. The Butler, the SCG and the footy

No, that’s not a Cluedo accusation.
It’s our third AFL debutant for 2020.
Louis Butler will follow in the footsteps of fellow debutants Ben Cavarra and Laitham Vandermeer when he pulls on the red, white and blue for the first time on Thursday night.
Selected by the Bulldogs with pick 53 in last year’s NAB AFL Draft, the 18-year-old is a half-back flanker known for his foot skills and decision-making.
Here’s hoping our Butler can deliver the forwards some… silver service.

4. The small forwards

It’s a different challenge for the Dogs’ defence to deal with this week.
The Giants went in with a three-pronged tall forward attack last week – Jeremy Cameron, Harry Himmelberg and Jeremy Finlayson – and Alex Keath, Zaine Cordy and co. proved they were up to the task.
But their cross-town rivals have a very different set-up.
Without the injured Lance Franklin, Sam Reid and Tom McCartin, the Swans look set to utilize McLean and a resting ruckman as their tall forwards.
And it’s a very dynamic mix around them. Rising star Isaac Heeney and goal-sneak Tom Papley headline a group of dangerous smaller players – alongside the likes of Nick Blakey, Will Hayward and Lewis Taylor – the Bulldogs will need to keep a tight leash on.

I like the idea of having Libba and Wally to go into the middle against this mob, they are slow but I'm confident we have enough outside run now to compensate for this and offset the grunt work Wally, Libba and Macrae will need to lay down. I'm also ok with English against Naismith and Sinclair because of the same reason. I think Wally, Libba and Macrae are excellent defensively.

They are bereft of talls up forward which suits Keath and Cordy but I am worried about their smalls, especially Papley so I hope we've put some work into him. I wish Duryea was playing.

It goes without saying that we need to make the most of our chances up forward and we need to get something out of Lloyd, Dale and Bruce this week. They look small down back I think this is Bruce's best chance to get off the leash.

I wouldn't say they are bereft of talls, but of quality talls.

They are obviously missing Buddy, Reid and McCartin but still have the resting ruckman (Sinclair/Naismith), McLean (197cm) and Blakey (195cm).

I do agree it's their small and medium players that are of more concern though. Given the small SCG English should be able to get back to help the defence in the air again but we have to be on guard when the ball hits the ground.

Naughton has only kicked 1 goal in three matches this year and also needs to pull his finger out.

He was clearly underdone in game 1 and we never really got the ball down there so he can be excused from that game.

Last week there were much better signs and I think he'll perform well tonight.

But pretty much across the league tall forwards are struggling so its not just him.

Between him, Smith, West, Vandermeer, and West, there’s 4 1 at or 2nd year players who seem unfazed by pressure

McLean will be taken to task for his lack of possessions and yet he's had more than Bruce and Keath
I acknowledge Keath hasn't done much wrong and agree Bruce has been disappointing again so far.
Needs to lift in a bit way and become a multiple goal kicker tonight

Mclean is a mid and needs to do more. He goes missing in games.

just a question are the swans using their main backs to stop Bruce which is giving our other forwards opportunities , everytime I see Bruce he had Alir Alir and another player on him.
And we also aren’t really kicking it to him either.
He might not be getting near it but this could be the decoy.
I’m not going to slam him if others are kicking goals.
Whoever is on Dale is shitting themselves they are giving him free kicks left right and centre trying to stop him.

When Mclean works hard both ways, he doesnt need to win loads of the ball.
The game doesn't seem to be an intercept friendly game; maybe its the shorter SCG? But Keath is noticeable by the lack of impact his direct opponent is having.
Bruce just doesn't seem to be adding anything to his 3rd of the field.
I hope he can get some shots on goal, we might need him to hot his straps if Naught's ankle keeps him out for games.

Lots to like, not least of all that we turned a corner last week then backed it up.

Bailey Smith might just be leading our B&F. What a find. A cornerstone of the next decade.

Low key shout-out to Zaine's game, he gave them nothing in the first half when we gapped them.

There's no 'reverse' in Westy's gearbox. He's a hard-boiled nugget of hunger and smarts. Imagine when he's played 50 games.

Pleasing to see Dale more involved around the ground, he certainly doesn't lack the toolbox. Maybe we shouldn't bury him in a pocket so often.

We all know what the Bont can do but he still has the ability to leave you agog with gratitude and admiration.

2 men down, that last quarter was terrific.

A really good win. I was nervous about this one. Thought we might have set ourselves for The Orange and be unable to back up and produce the same intensity. A very positive sign of the spirit in the group.

How immense was Bont. He seemed unshackled from the burdens of the last few weeks. He looked the best player in the comp in the first half.

Given the unusual training restrictions I’m impressed by the body strength of our kids. Great body use by West to get that mark & critical goal, and Vandermeer also impressed with the way he marked against Rampe. Daniel is having a fine year. I’ve always been a ZAine fan, loved his work tonight. There were important contributions from every player but Josh Bruce is unfit and becoming frustrated. Good to see Libba run the game out, his work in close was important when the game got tight.

Good to see Libba run the game out, his work in close was important when the game got tight.

What Tim English brought tonight was amazing. To run all night, for a man of his size..he could revolutionise the game.

AstroNaut looked on for a big night. Go away injury gods *shakes fists*. This kid could be anything.

There has to be a a few teams all of a sudden challenging what a successful ruck set up looks like. Cause I can certainly handle losing the centre bounces if it means we have a massive win in all other facets around the ground from ruckmen.
Would love to see stats around ruckmen involvement in score. That might either inflate or deflate this.

I have a confession to make to WOOF community. I have fallen in love with Rhylee West.

Must not be dropped. One of our best. Does lots of little things really, really well. Has some mongrel too.

Seeing him in the flesh in the VFL a few times last year and watching more mature players routinely bounce off him in contests all I could think was struth, the lad already belongs in the ones.

He's hard as f**k, maybe even harder than the old man.

2 men down, that last quarter was terrific.

For an exceptionally young group, to back up a rough and tumble win and then win away in this context is the sort of one that does put credits in the tin. A long way to go, but that was promising. More so than last week IMO.

Agreed. Need to put together really solid performances over the next three weeks, and hopefully get through round seven at least two games ahead of the ledger.

Libba hardly touched the ball in the second half, I guess he ran out of puff, as did a couple of others with two men down plus three games in 12 days.
