I think it's a good idea to engage the fans, especially the kids (and big kids). Would be a bit of excitement to try and spot yourself in the crowd.

What I want to know is if you get to keep your cutout after the season? :D

Love the idea. Also like they did not use it as money making opportunity when temptation would have been there. Will be a cost in making the cutouts. Perhaps make donation optional in future games to increase the virtual cheer squad numbers.....

I think they said it was dependent on getting a sponsor to foot the cost and Pedigree seem to have come to the party.

Yeah, this is an opt in that I won't be bothering with.

As I've said previously, if the product itself and the supporting broadcast commentary of it were of a high enough standard none of this would be needed.

Watching the NFL the cardboard fans offer nothing to the experience really. I guess it's going to be a novelty the first time but it's a cost to the game we can do without at the moment from my POV.

I’ve been trying to upload my daughters photo - doesn’t work! Have tried both phone and laptop, just sits there and does nothing. Disappointing.

Edit: Never mind, figured it out, apparently the photo wasn’t large enough, even though I took it exactly as instructed. Chose a different one and it worked. Error message was hidden.

It is, but still.

I've been so busy during lock down I've missed so much. Has the club offered anything else to loyal members other than a chance to be a cardboard cutout at the game?

Saints are sending members to a drive in theatre which I thought was a really cool idea. My membership is going to be a donation, I've said that from day one but I can't help but feel a bit ripped if cardboard cutouts are all we'll get.

I've got no issue with missing out, I'm sure there were far more than 1000 applications. I think it is poor form that a generic email couldn't be sent out saying sorry you missed out, overwhelming demand, etc, etc. I know they are currently understaffed but 5 minutes to type up an email to send to all the unsuccessful applicants isn't a big ask. After all I'm paying for 1 adult, 2 kids and dogs membership for very little in return this year. I guess it could still turn up though.

Bred Bulldog: Paul Schwedes (https://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/news/718923/bred-bulldog-paul-schwedes?fbclid=IwAR0hn428ZA3Ml2Ck6yhs49ihz7zhQJypHM6l79Pyrn MKvVRuZEUr1rEvZuY)

https://i.postimg.cc/SxhbddbL/COM0530-Bred-Bulldog-Editorial-Template-1.png (https://postimages.org/)

Red, white and blue proudly ran through the veins of Paul Schwedes.

And on Friday night, he will be at Marvel Stadium – at least, in cardboard cut-out form.

Paul passed away almost a year ago, aged 81, after a life-time of cheering on Footscray and the Western Bulldogs.

When the opportunity arose to have him represented in the crowd, his family jumped at it.

“When I heard about the virtual cheer squad, I thought, Dad would have loved to be at the game,” his daughter, Zoe Elliott, said.

“I contacted the Bulldogs to find out how I could get Dad in the crowd.”

And now he’s there, ready and waiting for the Bulldogs to take on the GWS Giants on Friday night, alongside a host of Bulldogs supporters from all parts of the country.

Paul’s allegiance to the Bulldogs started at a young age and never wavered.

“Dad has barracked for the Bulldogs since he was about nine years old – so he saw two premierships in his time,” Zoe said.

“I’m not really sure why he started supporting the Bulldogs, but he was an avid supporter.

“As part of his funeral ceremony, when he was lowered down we actually played the Bulldogs theme song.

“He was a cheeky character, so it was a bit of a moment there.”

His legacy as a Bulldogs man will carry on into the future too.

Five of his nine grandchildren have followed in his footsteps, according to Zoe, while the Western Bulldogs’ supporters group he helped found in the Wimmera region lives on.

That four-hour drive from Horsham to Melbourne was made often.

Zoe recalls trips to Melbourne as a child conveniently overlapping with opportunities to watch – then Footscray – train at Whitten Oval.

“Dad would be in there for ages, talking and whatever with club people,” she said.

“He was pretty excited about the Bulldogs.”

The great Ted Whitten Sr was one of his favourites.

And there was a young bloke who caught his eye a few years back, who he thought might have something special.

“He was a huge fan of Teddy Whitten,” Zoe said.

“He used to comment, back in his early days, that the ‘Bont’ would have a big future.

“He picked him out early on and thought he’d be one to watch… a pretty good judge of character.”
