Was going through drafts as a curiosity. Here's drafts since 1999 broken down by our picks (not including traded players) and placed in teams as demonstration of the actual drafting we've done in in the various ranges (this is my take on the better players, not every draftee makes a squad):

First Round Team (4 Premiership Players):

B: Everitt - Naughton - Richards
HB: R. Murphy - Williams - Griffen
C: McMahon - Macrae - F. Ray
HF: Higgins - Stringer - C. Smith
F: J. Grant - Ugle-Hagan - Weightman
R: English - Cooney - Bontempelli
I: B. Smith - Wallis - S. Darcy - S. Power
E: A. Cordy - Howard - T. Walsh

Mid Round (2nd-3rd Rounds) Team (8 Premiership Players):

B: B. Dale - J. Roughead - E. Wood
HB: Gilbee - M. Adams - B. Montgomery
C: C. Daniel - C. Ward - Hunter
HF: Hahn - K. McGuiness - McLean
F: Giansircua - L. Jones - T. Dickson
R: Minson - Liberatore - J. Dunkley
I: B. Williams - Rhylee West - Addison - Birss - Lipisnki
E: Faulkner - L. Young - Hrovat - VDM

Late Round (Fourth Round and later, PSD if haven't played VFL/AFEL) Team (2 Premiership Players, with us):

B: Roberts - Lake - Z. Cordy
HB: Schofield - R. Hargrave - Wight
C: Hayes - Garcia - Bedendo
HF: Saunders - J. Hill - S. Thorne
F: M. Lynch - Bruton - A. James
R: Skipper - Cross - Cleary
I: Tiller - Markovic - Bowden - O'Shea - Greene

Rookie Team (including Rookie Mid Season Draft, and Delisted Free Agents) (6 Premiership Players, 2 Emergencies):

B: Gardner - Hamling - Khamis
HB: Johanissen - D. Morris - J. Harbrow
C: Jong - L. Picken - R. Smith
HF: Goodes - Redpath - Hooper
F: Gowers - M. Pask - Mulligan
R: T.Campbell - M. Boyd - Dahlhaus
I: B. Lynch - Sweet - Raak - McNeil
E: Fuller - Greenwood - Barlow - Moles

The teams are pretty strong. I think it shows good drafting by the club across all the draft rounds and rookie drafts. Probably more so 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Rookie drafting. Probably hihglighting very late picks in the ND is much, much harder to find a good kid. Only really Lake, Hargrave and Cross as proven guns to date.

Also shows we have a brilliant track record on identifying defenders and midfielders. Less so with gun small/mid forwards, but still good. But a lack of good KPF's clearly stand out across the years, until the last few years with Naughton, Marra and Darcy.

Head to Head:

I reckon if the First played the Seconds/Thirds it would be a cracker. Probably the 2nd/3rds winning, just.
But I reckon the Rookies win in a canter versus their more highly draft late National Draftees.

Wow.

Great post. Interesting that the backs are strong for the lates/rookies yet the forwards are weak...not one of the 12 listed were what you would call ‘regulars’...

Hazard a guess why? For the life of I can’t figure out whether it’s an across the board thing, or something about our talent identification with tall forwards? We took a heap of them, just none any good. The good ones recently were a KPD when drafted, a priority access NGA and/or F/S. So we’re a little lucky.

Also, when you look at our consistent good work in the second and third rounds, you can appreciate the cost a little more for guys like Bruce & Lobb. I’m not saying don’t trade for them, but we are pretty good with in this part of the draft.

argh, got it.

Some strong teams. Which team wins in a match? hard to go past our first rounders

I think the 2nd/3rd Team beat the 1sts by less than 12 points.

Minson at his best feeding equal hard inside mids. Better wingers, slightly better defence and dangerous small forwards.

Could it just be player types?

Off the top of my head tall forwards that are good or better are almost universally high draft picks, there's maybe a handful in the last decade that weren't (Larkey, Mihocek, Brown, Walker).

This plus our complete disinterest in drafting small forwards at all means the late pick forwardlines suck, which is kind of funny considering most of the good small forwards in the league were rookies/late picks (Cameron, Close, Frederick, Butler, Papley). We just haven't even really tried.

Conversely I would think defenders are rarely drafted in the first round and if they are they often start out as forwards.

bulldogtragic a big thanks for this thread. I've read it twice and just don't think clucking the thanks button is enough.
