Brownlow Medallist Brad Hardie has launched an extraordinary tirade against Mick Malthouse, labelling the Collingwood coach a "tosser" for leaving him out of his dream team.

Ahead of his 600-game coaching milestone, Malthouse was asked to pick an ultimate team of 22 containing only players he had coached during his stints at the helm of Western Bulldogs, West Coast and Collingwood.

Hardie played under Malthouse at the Bulldogs for two seasons, winning the Brownlow Medal in 1985 and winning the club champion award in 1986, as well as being named a temporary captain that year.

But he was a surprise omission when Malthouse named his team.

To add salt to the wound, Hardie didn't even make Malthouse's alternate team, which consisted of 31 players.

Hardie has no doubt his omission was due to his running feud with Malthouse, which stemmed from a falling out way back in 1986.

"The bloke is a tosser. That's my feeling on him," Hardie told radio 6PR on Monday night.

"There are a lot of people in the industry that think it but don't have the balls to say it.

"If it is his favourite team that is fine I am not going to be in his favourite team, if it his best team yes I should be in it.

"The reason I should be in his best team - I played 47 games for the Bulldogs, that was all I could play, never missed a game, never got dropped.

"I won the club champion award in 1986 which Mick would have voted on, ran third in 1985 which Mick would have been voting on.

"I won the Brownlow Medal in 1985 which Mick was not voting on but was obviously doing something right.

"I played in the state games in 1986 and won a Simpson and a Tassie medal which I am very proud of."

Malthouse will join Jock McHale (714) and Kevin Sheedy (635) as the only men to have coached 600 games or more when he takes charge of Collingwood against Sydney on June 20.

And they Rekon Grant Thomas had an opinion !
I love Brad but sometimes i thing the mouth starts before the brain kicks in, always great for calling it as he sees it, bit like Rodney Hogg on SEN.
How boring media would be without these characters.

Brad Hardie was sensational in 1985 and a very worthy Brownlow medalist. Malthouse is childish to leave him out of his best team.

IMO, Brad was a terrific but I can understand why Mick left him out. He just wouldn't do what the coach asked.

So is it his best players he coached or his favourites?

Personally credit where its due if he wouldnt do as the coached asked why did Mick give him votes for certain awards?
Maybe its like Wallace and us, Matthews and Aker, one bad week or month and all previous record goes out the door.

When i read the first bit i thought Brads blowing his own trumpet here but if you read on he should be there.

Only explanation Mick probably has is it was only 47 games.
Couldnt do much more in 47 games though could you?

Suppose it comes back to who the other players he picked were and was Brad better than them, i havent seen the list but with Brads record i would imagine he should have got a gig somewhere.

Lets be honest, it's whatever Mick wants it to be.
Hardie was great in 85 and a a pain in the backside for Mick in 86 so why should he rate him in the best? I'm not sure I agree with Mick mind you but it is after all his side to select.

I'm sure if they asked Brad the best coaches he played for Mick probably wouldn't rate that highly so why is Hardie getting all riled up about it? In my opinion this "controversy" just creates headlines for his show.

Any supporter who had the pleasure to see Hardie in his 2 seasons with us would love him but would also know that the marriage between the coach and the player wasn't the greatest of relationships.

Sounds very much like sour grapes... I was only a young tacker when Hardie played at the Dogs, and so only remember him as a "good player" (and a bloodnut like me!). But is he seriously THAT upset by being left out? Obviously Mick's opinion means a lot to him. Can't think why he'd care, otherwise. Take out the names and other particulars, and you could well be describing a playground "tiff". Just feel like telling him to build a bridge.

Yes, definitely friction between those two during the stint together as player and coach. The infamous jumper waving at Malthouse will be never be forgotten, that was the straw that broke the camel's back. Mick was asked on Footy Classified about it last night and he basically said he wasn't to interested in what Hardie had to say and would leave it well alone.

What about Jim Edmond?

Hmmmm, you would think Mathouse would have slotted him in somewhere...guess he didn't rate him as highly.

He had to squeeze in such superstars as:

SIMON PRESTIGIACOMO (Coll),
DAVID HART (WC)
TONY EVANS (WC)
KARL LANGDON (WC),
PETER WILSON (WC),
DWAYNE LAMB (WC),
SHANE O'BREE (Coll),
MITCHELL WHITE (WC),
SHANE WAKELIN (Coll),
CHRIS TARRANT (Coll)

Jock was a better player than any of these guys.

I agree Edmond was better than that lot. Mick arrived as coach in 1984, Edmond left in 1985. He coached Edmond for two years.

How about Ben Cousins? - Mick coached him for three years before moving to Collingwood. He didn't rate a mention either.

Douggie Hawkins view on the subject....

Mick Malthouse was wrong to overlook Brad Hardie - Doug Hawkins (http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sport/afl/story/0,26576,25613666-19742,00.html)
The Herald Sun
Mark Stevens | June 09, 2009

BULLDOGS great Doug Hawkins defended former teammate Brad Hardie, declaring he should have been a no-brainer for Mick Malthouse's best team. "I'm not talking best 22. Best 18," Hawkins said last night.

"In my opinion, Brad had the same impact in two years under Mick as some took six to 10 years to achieve."

Hardie branded Malthouse a "tosser" after he left him out of not only his best side, but also an "alternative" team of 31 players.

Malthouse was asked by the Sunday Herald Sun to name the best players he has coached in a decorated career with Footscray, West Coast and Collingwood.

Jim Edmond's omission also raised eyebrows given he captained the Dogs to a preliminary final in 1985, but the snub of Hardie opened old wounds.

"If it is his favourite team, that is fine, I am not going to be in his favourite team. If it his best team, yes I should be in it," Hardie said on Perth's radio 6PR on Monday.

"The bloke is a tosser and there are a lot of people in the industry that think it, but don't have the balls to say it."

Hardie won a Brownlow in 1985 under Malthouse and followed it with a club best-and-fairest in 1986.

But the relationship soured in Round 21, 1986, when Hardie waved his jumper at the coach's box after being dragged.

The attacking back-pocket player left for Brisbane, but Hawkins said his influence should be remembered.

"He was in the best three or four I played with," Hawkins said.

"We're friends, but I thought he was a good team bloke.

"The people of the western suburbs loved him. He had that knockabout element.

"No doubt, Mick and Brad aren't talking and it is sad. They are three-quarters dead. Let's move on. Life is too short."

Hawkins said he had no problem with Malthouse, who placed him on a half-back flank in his best team.

"He was a very good coach, but when Brad took his jumper off, that was the last straw," Hawkins said.

"Brad went to Brisbane. They couldn't come to a compromise."

Hawkins said Hardie had for years been unfairly criticised for allowing Leigh Matthews to cut loose in the final term of the 1985 preliminary final as Hawthorn stormed home.

"Brad's performance was outstanding that day. You've got to remember Matthews was moved off him," Hawkins said.

"But Matthews was never beaten and came back on. A couple of the goals nobody could have done anything about."

Was anyone at Waverly Park when Hardie took off his jumper and started waving it at Mick in the coaches box, I remember it well.

Hawkins loses credibility when he says Hardie is a mate, of course he is going to say he should be in the side.

ahead of who in the 1st team? I loved watching Hardie play but he was not the most accountable footballer going around.
What I am surprised about is that Malthouse picked McLean on a wing in the Alternate team yet always played him on the bench.
I rated Magic highly just did not think Malthouse saw the best of him at the Dogs.

The Brad Hardie jumper waving incident showed that Brad had no faith Malthouse making coaching decisions. Hard to have faith in one who does not express it. Does not suprise me one bit Hardie was left out of both teams under those circumstances.

Hardie deserved to be in that team - his ommision from either team shows Malthouse still holds a grudge. Hardie perhaps shouldn't have stoked the fire, Brad Johnson was on the Today show this morning and he also said that Ex players shouldn't get too caught up in such things.

Hardie just wasn't as coachable as the other players in his teams, this is something he rates above all else.
