In some email banter today, the names of 2 bad Sainters came up: Mad Dog Muir and Jim O'Dea (and O'Dea's victim Greening).

How bad were they and what are some of the other legendary bad guys of the past?

Was Muir interesting to watch?

That hit by Banks on Rhys Jones still makes me feel ill.

I remember being at a Carlton V Hawthorn final at VFL Park in the 80s with my Mum when Dippa elbowed Rod Austin in the head. Was right in front of us - not pretty.

And who will ever forget Rod Grinters hit on Terry Wallace?

I like the rough stuff as much as anyone else, but assault, partciularly cowardly assault, is just that. I don't miss it and i'm glad the gutless acts which bob up every now and then get massive suspensions like Hall's, although i think Soloman's elbow to Ling's subsequent broken jaw was worse.

I couldn't find it Youtube, but Rod Grinters hit on Terry Wallace in the middle of the Western Oval, that was gutless from another thug.

Dipper was extremely dirty.
If anyone can put together a highlight reel of Dippers elbows.............

Then again it would be an all night movie marathon.

I'm glad you called this thread 'bad guys' rather than tough guys. O' Dea was a coward of the highest order. He king hit Greening (and nearly killed the poor bastard) when Greening was looking in the other direction.


I mostly hate him for making me feel sympathy for a Collingwood player.:p

Yep, always was and always will be the lowest form of person on the face of the Earth. The 'tough guy' persona that Lethal attracted was a joke. He was a good footballer but when it come to courageous act Matthews was just a sniper-his tactic was hit 'em before they see you and then get the **** away before the cavalry arrived.
