View Full Version : The five words I don't want to hear from dogs fans this week...

We have nothing to lose.

Bollocks. We have everything to lose.

We're 4 solid quarters away from our first grand final in 48 years.

We have a chance to show what this club is made of almost 20 years to the day after we were almost merged out of existence.

We have a player in the number 6 jumper who's played his heart and soul out for almost a decade and a half who I'm sure is sick of disappointment.

We lost this time last year in a game we virtually threw away.

In this game, there's no rep footy, no State of Origin, there's no National team. There's only one pinnacle to reach. The premiership.

The 22 that take the field need to play as though their lives depend on it.

Nothing short of throwing the kitchen sink at StKilda will be a satisfactory effort. Any lapses can and will be severely punished.

Nothing to lose? Bollocks.

I agree, we want a Grand Final and we must go all out to get one next Friday. We have the players to do it, and we can do it.

Samantha Lane said about Rocket that after the presser the other night he mentioned as soon as he heard Lions players saying they had nothing to lose and all the pressure was on the dogs, he knew immediately that we would win (Quote/Unquote), and that it is a false logic. Her view was that it won't be hapening with the dogs this week.

The punters might not be backing us, but we have a grand final spot to lose, or to win. All i want to hear is the commitment of 22 blokes to commit everything for 4 solid quarters and then back it up. If that occurs, my grand final tickets will be even more valuable.

12 Months on, and what do you know.

We go into a Prelim against the Saints a massive underdog, having been touched up in a Qualifier 2 weeks earlier.

The chance of victory much lower.

The level of expectation isn't.

All or nothing. Simple as that.

At some point, we're going to have to defy the odds and actually win a preliminary final to make the big dance. We're probably never going to be favourites heading into a PF partly because of our history alone.

Obviously there is a lot stacked against us this year compared to last, but as I said - sooner or later, we'll have to buck the trend and 'shock' the world so to speak.

I can't wait for it - this is what we play footy for.

Last year we were snaked out of a grand final birth by a free kick given for the most straight as a die searching for a boundary line klck I have ever seen. Plus its the first time I'd seen one paid. Oh and a Swan dive from a Saint. I'd expect that from the Sydney Ducks only but we just played and beat them.

That won't be happening again because we'll be waking up Sunday morning with the realisation we have to buy tickets again to attend the MCG the week after. My five are "We probably need Jason Akermanis."

LostDoggy
13-09-2010, 01:22 AM
Damn I hope all Dogs fans get to the game. It felt like Sydney had more numbers Saturday night. They are allowing AFL Silver members to buy tickets in the AFL Reserve which probably says they aren't expecting a bumper crowd. Anyone think we will crack 70k?

Never watched the replay. We fluffed it. I had a fit of agitated depression on the way out and broke a few chairs and bins. Was flat for days. Have been on this upward spiral today but am aware with the absolute highs we experience with every goal tomorrow night that feeling is always just around the corner.

That horrible feeling that comes with losing a final isn't going to worry us this year.

15-09-2016, 11:14 PM
Personally I think we've acheived our goals for the year (at least what I wanted to see) and think everything from here on is a bonus.

At the start of the year I wanted us to hold ground as teams were aware of our players, how we play and our structures and we'd have a more difficult draw. I believe we did that by winning 1 more game this year.

I wanted to see us be more consistent, not dropping easy games and making up for it with the upset wins (aside from St. Kilda and the dead rubber we were very good at that this year)

I also wanted to see this team win a final to get that monkey off the back. Last week was beyond anything I could have hoped for in that regard.

That we did this with all the injuries we've had this year is a great achievement. Regardless of what happens Friday I'll be happy with our overall season

There's no guarantees that we will be better next year.

With the way GWS are building - it might become extremely hard to win a flag in the next few years.

This year is as open as we have ever seen it. There is no exceptional team. This is an opportunity to pinch one.

We have everything to lose.

Things I don't want to hear.

1. GWS have been gifted blah blah and blah blah. We can't change that. Get on with it.
2. "Get stuck into them!" Any unnecessary flag flying and I will be ticked off. If any players are reported for idiotic acts, heartbreak.
3. Any pap historical stuff. Who gives a crap. It was a long time ago, prelim losses to blah blah, 54. Now is now.

5 words I don't want to hear;

IF ONLY WE KICKED STRAIGHT

I know its an obvious one. But I always hark back to before Freo played in the Grand Final a couple of years ago, Ross Lyon was asked if there was any one element of the game he'd like to see his team do well at what would it be - and he said (paraphrasing) "While there are so many areas of the game we need to do well in, you'd like them to kick straight".
It sounds so simple, and obvious. But scoreboard pressure is huge and there is so little room for error in a prelim, that we need to get it right.

If we (god forbid) didn't win the game - I think I would rather it be that the Giants outplayed us around the ground - than play as well as them, but missed goals leaves us with 'if's, buts and maybe's'.

Pre game we went to two different venues outside the ground and they had run out of beer. That was at least an hour before the game. At the Brewery bar there was a wait of 20 minutes to get to the bar. We gave up and went into the ground and got a drink. While I was getting my shout, my mates saw Mitch Wallis and they had a chat to him.
