View Full Version : How many talls do we need in the forward line?

Presuming Barry is a done deal, do we need a true CHF, someone around 196 cm, mobile, and that can take a contested mark, or is Barry enough and the rest of the forward line can be built around him?

As shown last Friday we have no problems getting the ball inside 50 we just need to find a way to turn those 'inside 50's' into goals against the very good teams.

Hopefully Hall will be able to help to create a contest when we are forced to kick long, but I think we need to add some pace to our forwardline to help create more forward pressure such that our forward 50 isn't a trampoline for the opposing teams rebounders.

Ideally you need two key forwards and mobility is just about a must.
Murphy would benefit greatly by having a true CHF to help him out.

would definetly take one of those if there was one but really we're not that far off. Hopefully combo of Grant, Cordy and Roughead in 2 - 3 years might serve us well and who knows maybe Lake 'might' end up moving forward at times if Williams and Boumann come on. Improved midfield and forward effectiveness (clean ball) and 'frontal pressure' is more imperative with the amount of ball we are getting into our fwd 50.

Hahn will still be around and Murphy should be better for us fully fit. Hall should make his man more accountable, and perhaps even take a second defender at times which could help our other guys show their wares. Remembering we were the highest scoring team in 09, a simple like for like with Welsh/Hall should only improve and not damage our scoring

Having said that, Hall is not a monty to be on the park and another tall forward would not go astray, keeping in mind we are already slow up there. I will be an interested follower in the trade period to see what we are doing in offloading Skipper and potentially Everitt, why would we load up on early picks and what will we do in the ruck? Are we chasing a Jarryd Roughead/Kurt Tippett mobile tall forward and backup ruck type?

Agree. It is a weakness that has not yet been fully exposed. As we have not had a KPF to create enough contests to bring the ball to ground, all the rebounding has been attributed to a KPF deficiency rather than a lack of quick crumbing forwards that can pile on the defensive pressure. This is probably fair up until this point, but to make the most of our new KPF we need to add someone to live under his feet

I would like to think that with Hall as the main key forward we give guys like Grant/Roughead/Boumann a run in the pocket-flank where they won't get the main defender and can start being eased into the side.

Is a shame that Murph will miss the next 4 months as putting in enough time to get the new forward structure functioning will be key - Hopefully Bazza and Murph can pull it together quickly.

I'm not sure if thats a massive issue for Murph, he tends to lead pretty far out anyway on alot of occasions, it will be more important to get it right with the ball coming down from the backline, midfield etc, working out where he leads to, what spaces he generally takes up, probably also more important for players playing close to him, in the pockets, where to crumb etc.

How would you feel about trialling Everitt at CHF in the NAB cup?

Six. One to mark the ball and the other five to forever end the endless media debate about whether the Dogs need a tall forward.
