THE Brian Lake saga is over, with the All-Australian defender committing to stay at the Western Bulldogs.

It is understood Lake told the Dogs last night that he would accept a four-year deal and a formal announcement is set to be held at Whitten Oval today.

News of Lake's decision came as Hawthorn resuscitated a deal for Shaun Burgoyne and speculation grew about a three-way bid to send Brendan Fevola to Sydney.

And speculation mounted last night that Leon Davis could depart Collingwood as part of a complex deal to snare St Kilda's Luke Ball.

Port Adelaide's disappointment at missing out on Andrew Lovett yesterday seemed likely to scuttle a deal that would send Burgoyne to Hawthorn.

The initial deal would have seen Burgoyne go to the Hawks, Lovett to Port Adelaide, and Hawks forward Mark Williams to Essendon.

But late yesterday, Hawthorn and Port agreed they would deal on Burgoyne, with the Hawks pick nine and a player going to the Power.
"We and Hawthorn have identified a player we are both happy to trade," Port football manager Peter Rohde said last night. "We now have to come to terms with the player."

It is not known if that player is stillWilliams, or if Port Adelaide has held out for a quality runner.

Burgoyne's manager Ben Williams denied reports that his client had met with Demon Aaron Davey in Melbourne's city district yesterday.

Collingwood and Sydney played a straight bat to rumours a three-way deal could be developed that would see Fevola jettisoned by the Blues.

Sydney coach Paul Roos and Collingwood football manager Geoff Walsh yesterday said there had been no discussions on the Darren Jolly-pick 14 deal.

Fevola is well aware of Sydney's interests and is open to a move north but it is well-known his wife Alex is opposed to a move to the Harbour City.

But sources close to Carlton said the Swans had offered a deal, or were preparing to, which would see Jolly to Collingwood, Fevola to Sydney, and pick 14 to the Blues.

While Carlton is desperate to off-load Fevola, it is certain to want more than pick 14.

Roos was adamant yesterday Sydney's pick No. 6 would not be involved in any negotiations.

The Dogs appear likely to lure Mark Nicoski from West Coast, capping off a big week after snaring Barry Hall and the signature of Lake.

Nicoski appeals to the Dogs as a running defender and he may be headed to Whitten Oval in exchange for a late draft pick.

It is understood West Coast wants the Dogs second round pick, No. 31, in return for Nicoski. But the Dogs are likely to baulk at that and may hope to land Nicoski for a fourth round choice.

Lake met with Bulldogs football manager James Fantasia and coach Rodney Eade on Monday night.

Bulldog Andrejs Everitt continues to attract attention, with the Saints believed to be still keen if they can grab a decent pick for Luke Ball.

North Melbourne seems likely to secure Joel Macdonald from Brisbane, while Collingwood is yet to find out what St Kilda wants for Ball.

Magpies football manager Walsh said yesterday there was little movement.

"Nothing has moved with us on Jolly or Ball. We are status quo. We want (Jolly) and think we are making a fair deal. We have met with St Kilda (on Ball) but again they want to deal around players so we have to come up with something that satisfies them," he said.

Assuming the HS is on the money, looks like the Age either missed the boat and/or is trying to wring one last drop out of the story.

Not sure what to make of the Nicoski talk further above...For all the talk of our need for speed, the last thing we need is another outside type who habitually butchers the footy.

Vastly different views on things. I know which one I'd prefer to believe.

Interesting that Everitt is still being mentioned given that it's been stated a few times that he is a required player.
We must be looking to add an experienced small defender given that Nicoski is being mentioned. If that's correct it will make things hard for Callan and maybe Addison.

Great news this, really sets us up for a big 2010 now.

Starting to get an actual spine in the team, something we haven't had for years.

We will still have a 6'1" guy playing CHF and do not have a CHB who we really can depend on as yet.

Here here, Spangher still has not signed with WCE. If Saints can give us a decent pick for Everitt, we will be in a position to perhaps address our CHB issue. Assuming Spangher wants out. Not saying he will be our saviour, does however offers us depth down back, and for a 2nd round pick, we should be able to get him.
This will mean we still have 2 first round picks.

Have not heard a thing on Spangher all week which I think is a bit of a surprise considering quite a few teams were apparently interested in him.
