Just looking at the new features:

a) Partial Lock Outs For Selected Rounds - avoids the chaos that usually accompanies round 1, when a game commences on a Thursday night & teams are only selected on a Thursday night. Also applies for the split rounds.

b) New Team Editing Function - say if you have a player who could be selected for 2 positions (a defender you select but is also able to be selected as a forward), they will now be able to be switched around (from defence to forward) with a simple substitution. Allows greater flexibility when an injury occurs. No longer need to make a trade.

c) An iPhone app.

This is a VERY interesting one.

Makes those players much more valuable, like a cricket all rounder. I'll bet they're priced accordingly too.

Anyone like to offer their thoughts on Gilbee and Harbrow as SC players this year? I'm quite interested in grabbing one of them as I feel both can go better than their 2009 averages around the 85 mark.

At the moment I have Cooney, Griffen and Murphy in my side.

I'm in and organised(first time:o). I seem to have quite a strong Bulldog flavour for some reason, with Lake, Harbrow, Cooney, Ward, Higgins and Gia in the starting 18, Everitt on the bench and Rose, Moles and Wood as emergencies:eek:.

Hey Griff, ive had gilbee the last 2-3 years and on occasions he has burnt me with low scores when he has been tagged. Im thinking of him again as i think he could be in for a big year.

Murph could be a steal at his price.

Also what are peoples thoughts on dogs players in SC this year? Im just trying to pencil in the Callan Ward of 2010..Wood? Boumann? Thorn? Roughie? Grant? Jones? Stack? Daniels? Mulligan? Not sure which way to go..maybe Thorn in hope he plays 6+ games..cheap sub.

I find HS more realistic in that players get points based on their performance. Ex: bad kicks means minus points.

Hehe yeah i think i changed my team about 100 times last year before round 1. I want to have Dogs players in there, but i find that i get frustrated watching those players while I'm hoping for the dogs to win. Last year i only had Gilbs and Higgo, so i reckon 2 might stretch it again this year.

I can't remember if I had him last year...I'm pretty sure I did, what can I say, I'm far too loyal for my own good. I figure that I'm not going to do very well anyway, so I may as well pick someone I want to do well, rather than someone I hate but would benefit from them doing well...for the most part anyway.

Anyone else find the whole dreamteam thing just too damn complicated with trades etc etc etc?
I used to love it when it was in the paper and you picked a team and just sat back and hoped.
With three little kids and all the blah blah of working for yourself and juggling creche, school, gymnastics, illnesses, I just wish there was a dumbed down version of dreamteam.
ALSO It's a constant battle for computer time at home, but if I could sit in a cafe with a coffee and a newspaper. A pencil and a calculator, that would be fun.
Maybe I'm just a grumpy old prick but anything that requires me to spend MORE time on the computer is an absolute drag.
BRING BACK ANALOG DREAM TEAM.

I remember spending a blissful afternoon at Genoa falls. (East Gippsland)

I agree - trading is for wusses. I entered the 1995 age dreamteam with real paper, and won a weekly high score. I was overseas backpacking at the time, got a letter (thats like a paper email for you youngins...) via post restante in Cairo. From my dad informing me I won $500 and a sherrin signed by 2/3rds of the team!!

ah, back in the days when it was possible to be incommunicado.

Much better players than him to select at very similiar prices.

You couldn't imagine a forwardline containing Mooney, Hawkins and Pods would be functional.

I'm pretty close to going with Pods because I have a lot of value elsewhere and have a few of the cheaper forwards in my group already, meaning there aren't a bunch of other options available.

I'm not convinced on Trent Dennis-Lane, although he is another option in the same price range who may play a bit of football this year.

With David Rodan perhaps coming back sooner rather than later according to an article in this mornings Advertiser, I may need to re-think on a Port rookie who I had slotted into my forward line.... hmmm.

I grabbed Pods in mine, this is the first time i've played it, so it's a bit of trial & error on my behalf.

I ended up spending all my dosh and was left with 3 players short, so i had to trim some fat in the midfield & forward line, and went with Pods on the bench, could only spend 90 something grand, and compared to other forwards of the same group, he was a no brainer.

I also went for Moles [needeed a few cheap as chip types], as well as Barlow who i think is a steal down the bottom of the food chain, has proven in his 2 NAB games that he cab rack up those possies.

I ended up with 10 Doggies players in mine..:D

Yes, he's not the biggest guy going around, but boy he's looked good. My comment was more in relation to the success Glenelg has seemingly had out of the latest crop of youngsters...especially when compared to such esteemed breeding grounds as Norwood ;)

Interesting tactic.

I seem to have really loaded up on defenders at this stage, but have a few high quality players across each line. I figure the midfield area is the easiest to upgrade further down the track.

The cut-offs have been changed for these "split" type rounds.
You only need to lock in players from tonight's game today, and then the rest of the round by game start tomorrow night.

Situation is a lot fairer, particularly when teams are naming such large benches these days

Welcome to the stressfull world of supercoach.

So I am beginning to realise! This is going to be rather time consuming!

If you don't have enough players to field a team (by which I mean after the teams are announced, you don't have enough players that were selected in real life on your team) should you trade off some of those players not playing for ones that are, rather than leaving 1 or 2 people on your team that won't be playing that week? I hope that makes sense.

However, that player might be playing next week and you just traded him out ... (where is the emoticon for pulling out one's hair???)

This is a great resource, it gives you live player stats for DT & FF, but not SC unfortunately (something to do with SC not providing the real time stats). Still interesting though. It is refreshed every 15 seconds, but beware if you are watching a delayed telecast (channel 7 I am looking at you) as this will show live scores and stats. There is a 'delayed' link but I have not tried it as yet.

If I could offer one piece of advice it would be to look for reasons not to trade very early on. I am only trading to either upgrade or downgrade (to get money to upgrade). Sideways trades are a killer, if you think a gun is a gun, 2 weeks shouldn't make a difference.

I know the big price change is happening this round but while they won't be this big overall, price changes happen every week from now. There are a few nice prospects who have played their 2nd game already but it's amazing how many of these options come throughout the year. Lots of kids will come in during various points of the season and provide quality downgrades and/or cash cows.

Great advice Rocco sideways trades never work and always leaves you with not enough trades down the track when you really need them. Agree with your second point also and Mantis brought up the golden rule 'never ever trade before the teams are finalised'.

I did my first two trades this week, and traded out A.Moore from Port for Silvagni from Freo (cash cow reasoning), and then traded out Hall for J.Brown (I have no doubt Hall will come good and score better in coming weeks, but Brown has been in ridiculous form).

Very pleased that Rockliff has been named too - needed my bench forwards to get a move on, especially given that Gray is still out this week. I'll keep the faith for another week, but then might need to pull the gun. Not very handy having $450K sitting there, not playing.

A few SC lessons tonight.

Trades are extremely valuable, don't just throw them away. Luke Ball has been traded out of a few teams I see. He comes out and scores 100 tonight. At his starting price, Ball only needs to have an average of 85 or so to not lose you money. After 3 games, his average is very close to that. Sure I thought trading him out before tonight would help, but a trade needs to help you a fair bit to be worth it.

Roo being injured is another good lesson of why to keep trades up your sleeve. Think of your list of 30, not too far off an AFL senior list. How many injuries do they cop? How many injuries does a 22 cop a week?

Final lesson is one for me to learn. If you have Ablett, put his as your captain every week. :(

I thought all the talk of Ball trading (he he :D) was very premature. I did burn one this week and that was getting rid of Darren Jolly. I would have lost a packet if I kept him and another sub 50 score tonight made me feel like I made the right choice................ at this stage.

Not sure what DT at the moment because I didn't put in a side this season (would be truly unfair to my partner, too obsessed with SC!).

It really depends on your aim. In 2008 I was lucky enough to come 4th (I don't mean that to be modest, truly can't do it if you don't have more good luck than bad). Last year my season fall away badly as I went for a boom or bust trading strategy after being away from the pack and I well and truly busted.

Well number 1, whether you want the $50k or the league win against mates, is to conserve your trades. Just because a trade will obviously help you out a bit doesn't mean you should do it. Sideways trades are generally not a good idea. They are were you trade players who are pretty much at same ability and points range. I hold my trades from 3 things:

1/ Cash in a cash cow by downgrading. Kid makes you money, his breakeven is getting close to difficult and you trade him in for a fresh rookie.

2/ Upgrading a non-keeper to a keeper: Don't trade up to a player you don't want in your peak 22. Use cash from cash cows to upgrade members of your 22. Good to keep an eye on guns who are in a bad cycle. That means they have a below par score which they carry around for 3 rounds. Try to get on one of this guys if the stars align.

3/ Long term injuries- general rule of thumb is that I get rid of a big priced player if he is out for at least 3 games. Emergency options are also big. For example my defensive emergencies are scoring well, so I will be more patient with defenders getting hurt.

www.tooserious.com.au is a wonderful site for break evens and the like.

I know a few people are keen on Rockliff but unless you don't have enough starting forwards, I advise to hold off trading him in until he has played his 2nd game. It allows for your forward rookies to raise in value a little and give you a chance to see whether Rockliff really is worth burning a trade. I would not be touching Rockliff unless he averages more than 80 over his first two games.

Was hoping to hold off on making some trades for a couple more weeks, but my ruck situation was looking very poor in Natanui and Ryder. Felt I couldn't afford to carry both of them, so made the decision to offload Ryder for Kruezer.
Was temped to go for Sandilands, but felt that at $421K Kruezer had more scope to increase in value and has put together some decent scores in the opening two rounds so made that trade.
I also made the call to free up some cash by offloading Krakouer from Port. I thought he might score heavily this season, but decided that the opportunity to hopefully cash in on a bargain by bringing in Silvagni.

I've now got $544K in the bank, which I thought I needed in case of injuries to key players, which it now looks I will have to use now that Riewoldt looks gone for a while.
I managed to score 2300 in the first round but dropped to 1900 odd in the second round, so am anxious to see how I go this weekend. Another sub 2000 round and maybe I will need to consider cashing in on the anticipated rise of a couple of my value picks.
Althought as Rocco has pointed out you need to be careful on pulling the trade trigger too often, and as I mentioned above, I've already used two crucial trades very early. Hope I don't regret it later in the year.

Just a few things (I must say I feel a bit odd giving out advice after Roo tonight!):

- Nothing wrong with Nic Nat. I have him and am really happy to have him. He is averaging 80 from the first two games, definitely enough from a starter at this stage. If the continues at the same rate, he will make you $60k by round 5 and $80k by round 8. I want as few mid-rangers are possible but he is looking a good one at the moment. Should be ripe for an upgrade to the under scoring Clark or Cox who should crash down in value.

- Ryder and Krakeour are typical of players who have had a breakthrough year which raises their value. Hard to take another step the next year. Ryder is hurt by Hille and Krakeour is a worry for me because his game has a very small margin for error and he is constantly in the gun because of his poor attitude. I think trading them out wasn't a bad idea but perhaps would have gone with Sandi over Kruezer due to not being a fan of having a massive chunk of money in the bank. Kruz does look a very nice option though.

Thanks for the insight Rocco.

I had a feeling I was taking a risk in Krakouer, and my initial instinct was not to pick him, for the same reasons you mentioned. However I thought that an improved Port may see him make an even bigger jump in his output off the half back.. The gamble didn't look like it was going to pay off, so I thought that it might be better to cut my losses lest his value go down next week.

Similarly with Ryder, I knew it was a gamble, but I thought the return of Hille may actually have helped Paddy this year. I was thinking that he may either see more action at CHB or become a marking forward option. However as with Krakouer I thought it was better to make a clean cut now.

You really have put a great deal of tactical thought into how you approach this game, and it makes for very interesting reading. Look forward to reading your comments as the season progresses.

Now I wait with trepidation on Roo's injury report..... if it's a short term 2-3 week outage, do I offload him.. or wait.... I don't have the scoring options on the bench to wait his return, so I think I may have to bite the bullet there.

Depends on a few things. I would think he is out for at least 3 weeks. My next forward would probably be averaging around 50-60 compared to the 100+ I can get for Roo's direct replacement. That's about 150 points for 3 weeks IF you have 7 other forwards.

Another consideration is Roo's price drop. He won't lose too much money this week as the two massive score are part of his 3 game cycle. Too Serious says he will only drop $5k. Thing is, if you trade him out, you can make a lot of money by bringing him back in after his 2nd game back because he will have to carry that 25.

If he averages 115 from his first two games that would result in a drop of $65k. If he doesn't fire in his first two games, even better. It means for two trades you end up with $65k, points for Riewoldt's replacement and an opportunity to upgrade a player (one of the trades need not be a waste if you time it in with upgrading a forward rookie to Roo when he is back). Another good reason to keep trades up your sleeve.

Always enjoy your insights RJ.

I have to say that the most important thing I've learnt that is rarely mentioned (but is implied by the 'don't trade unless you absolutely have to' rule) is how vital your original squad of 30 is. You can almost never spend enough time researching, perfecting and finalising it, because if you pick the right players there, you will make money while scoring well and keeping plenty of trades up your sleeve because you're not burning trades compensating for bad original choices. I have to say that I'm pretty chuffed with my original 30 -- all my emergencies bar my 4th ruck are playing this week, and the team is sitting on a healthy average with some guns yet to really fire consistently. Only headache now is the Roo.

Oh, yeah, and Gablett is always captain. If a guy can have a 38-possession game as an 'off' week, he can be my captain as long as he likes.

The only way you could justify his outrageous 'buy' price was that you use him as your captain each and every week.

I am happy to get the 250+ points he brings almost every week.

I have had Goddard as my captain for the first 3 games, i don't know how he went last night, i didn't watch the game, but he has done pretty well in the first 2 rounds, i figured that he would take his game to a new level this year, and gets alot of the ball as a sweeper down back.

By in large I agree with the always put Ablett as your captain but this was a pretty unique round for me.

Roo was coming off two 160+ scores, averaged over 140 against the Pies in the last couple of games, hadn't scored sub 80 for a year and averages even more when Kosi is out.

ROK averaging over 140 and Richmond are giving out SC points like no one else. Another one that has been very consistent with only one sub 80 score for about 20 games.

Ablett has been very good still but averaging a fair bit less than the pair. Freo have cut down their gun opponents SC scores through pressure affecting efficiency. Crowley didn't play against Cats last year but has had a very good record on Ablett. The big one for me is Ottens, Scarlett and Mooney being out, which is going to put pressure on the side. Also a 6 day break and trip to Subi.

It wasn't that I thought Ablett was going to fail, more so the others scoring higher. I saw Roo's window being about 90-160, ROK's 80-160 and Ablett's 80-140.

The Pies were flooding/double teaming Roo and would have done so all night, but he has well and truly shown that he can still score heavily despite that in the past. I don't put it in the bad choice so much as the bad luck basket. That being said, I am definitely locking Ablett in as captain for awhile if he can managed something resembling captain like scores.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another friendly piece of advice/heads up....
SC has a weighted score system. That means the same overall amount of points are given for each game. High possession games get weighted down and low possession games get weighted down. They have a magic total of 3300. Say the total at games end is 3000, that means everyone is given a 10% increase. So a score of 80 turns into 88. If the the total is 3600, their is a 8% or so decrease, so a 100 becomes 92.

Just means you shouldn't avoid a player because his team doesn't muck around with it much. Swans have been a much high scoring SC team than DT in the past for that reason (as well as the game rewarding contested possessions).

Yep. I have Roo, Brown, ROK and Pav and was definitely looking at the latter 3 scoring big so they would be as expensive as possible. Brown has done his job, ROK will surely go up in value but a tad worried about Pav after last week's week odd.

Thing I really like about Brown's SC game today is that he wasn't dominate, yet scored massively. In the past Brown has been prone to score poor scores but his body and Fev seem to give him so much freedom.

He had an enormous SC year a couple years back and looks well on the way to repeat it.

Fwiw I think I will trade in Buddy if he manages 80+.

2300-ish I think (which would be my second 2300+ score in three weeks -- happy!) with Roo not firing. I'm not sure what to do with him -- already have Browny, ROK et al.. Pav worth it RJ?

My subs scored reasonably this week -- McGuire, Bastinac, Pods, and Rockliff, also Silvagni has been good the first two weeks -- so may look to bring them into the 22 in coming weeks.

Only changes I would have made in hindsight to my original choices would be Macelski for Kennelly, and Hally for Gia (purely on money terms). Both Kennelly and Gia haven't been terrible, and still have the potential for coming good at a 95+ average, I guess. No real need to trade yet, but was tempted to move Everitt on for Macelski. Oh, also dodged a bullet -- nearly traded Dangerfield in this week.
