Mind you, if she's truly 18 or 19, I can't see why this is hugely newsworthy. I guess "starstruck teenager sleeps with footballer" is not sensational enough.

It says she is a teenage school girl. The players say she said she was 18 and her facebook page says 19 - it doesn't say how old she actually is.

I bet Andrew Lovett is very interested in the Saints response.

Why would the police have been called in if she was over 16?

Tim Watson has just explained on SEN the story as he has been told:

* 2 players go to a school to speak to a group of 30 students (this girl is one of the students)

* Some weeks later said girl who lives with 27 girl old woman go to Sydney to watch St.Kilda play.

* Afterwards girl hooks up with one player and has consensual sex.

* Two weeks later she hooks up with another player.

* A few weeks later she has pregnancy test, tells her housemate, who then goes to the school.

* Principal rings education department, who in turn calls AFL & St.Kilda footy club.

* Players told about it, they say their side - state they thought the girl was 18 and have no re-collection of her from the school visit.

You get the feeling there's plenty to come out of this story so it's going to be an interesting week, that's for sure.

Hopefully it reinforces to our blokes to concentrate on footy and do the right thing.

I assume the players are 19 pr over, which is why the police would have been called in - as I understand it, "I thought she was 18" is not a valid legal defence in statatory rape cases.

As mjp says Andrew Lovett wil be more than an interested observer, particularly his legal team if one or two players are charged.

I just hope the 3rd player isn't one of ours.

There are really only 2 issues here.

Is she over 16?

Did the players give her their details at the clinic or did she instigate the meeting in Sydney without them knowing who she was?

If she is over 16 and the players did not instigate contact and did not know she was from the school, then this has nothing to do with the AFL.

If she is under 16 or the players did instigate contact, then they are in a whole lot of trouble and the AFL will be all over it.

The involvement of a Collingwood player was that it was a Collingwood player's (Jack anthony I think) ex-girlfriend who was alledgedly raped by Lovett. And he was the person who reported it.

Its not that clear DFA4PM. The footballers are in a position of power (just like teachers are). We all know what happens to teachers that sleep with their students.
The players went to a high school footy clinic in which the girl attended.
When they met in Sydney, the players claim the girl said she was 19yo and do not remember her from the school footy clinic.
If it can be proven that the players do remember the girl from the school, they are in some serious trouble.

Looking at it from a purely financial (and not emotional) view:

Single parent's pension of just over $600 pf = $15,600.
Rent assistance of about $130 pf = $3,380.
Maximum child support income amount is $147,135, if the player earns more than that then child support would be about $16.5k

All adds up to nearly $35,500, tax free. Without leaving the couch. (I'm not sure how the child support affects the pension & RA though). This is all very rough estimates.

If I was a young woman, I'd consider it too. This without the baby bonus.

I'm not condoning what the Saints players did, if it comes out they've done the wrong thing, but at the end of the day, this young woman needs to take responsibility too.

I feel sorry for the kid. Awful circumstances to come into the world.

Police admit that former cop who alleges Stephen Milne rape charge case collapsed amid threats made complaint years ago

Stephen McMahon & Elissa Hunt - Herald Sun - 22 June

UPDATE 10.15am: POLICE now admit the lead investigator of a Saints rape charge did complain about interference by senior police before making his concerns public yesterday.

Former detective Sen-Det Scott Gladman claims that a 2004 rape charge against Saints star Stephen Milne collapsed amid a campaign of threats and intimidation from inside Victoria Police and by powerful club backers.

And in an embarrassing backflip, just hours after releasing an official statement that Sen-Det Gladman had never made a complaint, Acting Deputy Commissioner of Crime Steve Fontana has revealed concerns were raised with an unnamed assistant commissioner six years ago about interference in the investigation.
