AFL premiers Collingwood has signed a new sponsorship deal worth about $14m.

Insurance giant CGU has agreed to a seven-year partnership with football's most powerful club.

The Magpies unveiled its guernsey for next season, which will display a gold AFL premiers logo on the chest as well as the CGU emblem.

The seven-year deal, believed to be the longest in Australian sport, is CGU's biggest corporate sponsorship deal.

Can't wait for the ads:

My name is Joffa,
And people think I'm a duffa,
With me long grey hair,
Like Eddie, I'm everywhere,
I make opposition fans crack it,
When it's game over & out comes me gold jacket!

Whoever you are.....

As if they need the money, mongrels.

They could have sponsored us and there goes our debt.

Success makes money.
It pains me to say it but Eddie and his team have done a great job since he took over the club.

I'm not sure how Mission Foods have been performing in the Australian market but we would have to keep looking at getting major sponsors. 3 years of top 4 finishes can provide any potential sponsor some great coverage. We might not be able to land a sponsorship like Collingwood but we should be able to get a good result.

What I don't like about the Mission sponsorship is that it encompasses everything, ie, main sponsor, jumper sponsor, elite training centre sponsor etc. I don't think they paid enough to have the right to all this and it seems we were desperate when we accepted it.

Collingwood have the Westpac Centre, Emirates, CGU and many others all sponsoring a different aspect of the Club.

I hope we can do better next time.

This.

I hated how CH7 kept interviewing Joffa throughout the two Grand Finals.

You might find that he has signed a deal with them.

I think our sponsporship team were starting to feel the pressure of not having a main sponsor (or many worthwhile secondary sponsors) a few years back so to lure in Mission we gave them a whole lot for not a heap in return (compared to other clubs)

I made mention that last season we were the only club with the same sponsor for front of guernsey, back of guernsey & shorts (they also hold naming rights to our training centre). I don't know how much they pay for these privileges, but I would think they wouldn't be paying more than what Collingwood receive from CGU per year.

Until we start making more money from the business sector we are always going to be behind the 8-ball and although our on-field efforts have been pretty good over the past few years, I doubt in the current climate we will maintain our position unless we start drawing in more $$'s.

Pretty sure it's $1.5mil a year.

What do we lack in terms of equipment, facilities and specialist coaches etc to the powerhouse cashed up sides?

A few additional GPS vests? Gym equipment? An extra coach or two?

What would that cost us? Probably less that $500,000 with the vests and equipment being one off costs. It obviously is, but it doesn't sound like a huge hurdle to find a company that could offset that sort of dollars.

Susan Alberti chipped in to buy some of the equipment. The GPS's we borrow from Vic Uni and don't have enough for all players to wear one, whereas most clubs have one per player. I think from memory they cost $4k each.

Not sure what the answer is to get more sponsors on board.

Lets say the vests are $5,000 each, 20 of them is just $100,000.
$100,000 could be spent of gym equipment which must make us competitive with other sides.
For $200,000 it seems we would close the gaps with the richer clubs with equipment.

The biggest issue in the football department is staffing. Wé don't have enough physios and other staff as well as scouts asistants etc.

Your right on the equipment, surely we can do better.

And yet we have come a long way in 5 years as the spend has increased a lot since Eade came on board. Obviously we need more but the budget won't stretch that far.

There must be some part timers who can come in and do a specific job without it costing us a fortune. To me it all comes down to setting out a plan and getting some dedicated resources.
Easier said than done but there must be physios who would be reasonable with their costs and I'm sure recruiting staff/scouts can be found to help the club.

We have had a number of former players like the Ox come down and assist so there must be others that would want to expand their skill set whilst assisting the club.

I know its easy to get caught in the day to day running of the club but the issues we face seem to be hurdles more so than barriers.

We already have some part-timers who come down and assist, both Chris Grant & Wayne Schwass can be seen at training from time to time.... Not sure if these are paid roles or if they could be expanded, but it is an area we are already involved in.

I would think the major area's of concern would be in list management & recruiting. We just don't seem to have enough staff in those areas or perhaps we don't pay enough to ensure we have the highest quality applicants.... I guess the lack of pay could be something to be looked at across the board especially when we lost the services of Monty to Carlton at the end of the '06 season because they offered him about 250% more than we offered for a similiar position.... I'm not sure it would have an influence in all our decisions and while I have no idea of the actual effect and I guess it can't really be measured, but you generally find that the best people in their field earn the big $$'s.

Great post. Whose job description would long-term staffing and strategic workload management fall under? If we don't have a chief of staff type that's probably where it would go.

Regarding the recruitment team I certainly think that is one area that can be covered better without necessarily costing too much. You will find that a lot of recruiting people do the work for no real financial gain. To me it comes more down to organisation skills and getting a bit more from what we already have in place. Increasing the numbers and getting good people might not be that difficult or costly.

If we haven't got the right recruitment people in place then all the GPS vests, running treadmills and weights won't really help the side reach its potential.

Sue Alberti paid for the bikes in the Mission Elite Learning Centre at the end of last year. Yes we do need more GPS for our players. Have any of you thought of donating to the WB Forever Foundation (tax deductible) where these monies can be allocated to sports equipment. Please consider this option, it does not matter how small the donation maybe, it all helps. I know a lot is asked of our members, but please consider this suggestion. In conclusion, thank you to all the supporters who continue to support our great Club. I know I will never cease backing the Dogs.

Forget the jumper deal and sponsorship, Collingwood's revenue really comes from pokies. In 2009/10 was $23 million. That is $10 million more than any of the other clubs, with the doggies revenue well under $10 million.

Thanks for the suggestion, and all your great support, 'susie'. I will definitely be looking to support the foundation in this financial year.

Cheers!

For a lot of people it might come down to either a choice of chipping in with the debt reduction exercise or the forever foundation. Both are worthy initiatives.

thanks guys. It is your choice. Debt reduction is an absolute priority. Please help in any way you can. We now have a wonderful showcase at the WO where we can all be so proud. It brings tears to my eyes each time I visit the place. It was not that long ago that the WO was a rat infested, raw sewerage seeping out onto the concrete and the change rooms were disgusting. Now look at what we have created. It is our home and it belongs to all of us. Thank you.

So it was a bit like the change rooms at the MCG on grand final day?
