As in previous years I'll update this each week.

To be eligible to be nominated for the award, a player must be younger than 21 years of age on January 1 of the award year and have played 10 or fewer senior games before the beginning of the season. A player who is suspended during the season is not eligible to win the award, however is still eligible for nomination.

The NAB Rising Star for round 1 is Essendon's Dyson Heppell.

Agree with that, I think Libba showed more on the day, but my pick for the round would have been Tapscott or Shaun McKernan.

Libba Snubbed!

Well deserved gong for Shuey, he was extremely important in a hard fought win.

Libba's time will come if his form continues as it is.

Good call.

Exactly, as good as Libba was (and I didn't see the WC game) 27 touches and 3 goals is hard to argue with.
Libba will be nominated soon enough.
So will Wallis.

And Tapscott.

And Firstdogonthemoon.

I'm the over weekly the rising star award, and not because Libba didn't get it this week. Based on a weekly opinion against players in different games and doen't really mean much except for end of year chance of 24 in the final prize.

I'm a little disappointed but it's hard to argue against it.

Personally I rate 9 tackles higher than 3 goals. Libba will get his nomination soon enough so it doesn't really matter when they are nominated.

Do you really rate 9 tackles above 3 goals?!

Boyd had 11 tackles last week - most of which because he was second to the ball - I'd have preferred for him to have gotten on the scoreboard a couple of times!

It's the backman coming out in me. :D

I see goals the end result of hard work elsewhere.

I watched Libba very closely Sunday and his 9 tackles were not because he was second to the ball. I'm really not sure how Shuey got his goals, I didn't see their game. If he got them because of his own hard work then I'd gladly take the comment back.

It all depends how these stats came about?
If they are 3 freebie goals up against 9 chase down someone elses opponent then tackles would win hands down. If the tackles where a result of your opponent beating you to the ball and the goals were crucial hard fought team lifters then goals would obviously win.

It's about age. Something like being under 21 as of the start of the season, or as of the start of the year.

From memory, Shuey was a bottom-age draftee.

Heppell currently favourite at 5-1.
Young Libba 4th favourite at 11-1.

I know one astute judge who got Libba pre-season at $67.00 :)

I'm with you there mate. I haven't had a real issue with the nominations so far but those in charge seem to really rate accruing disposals. Having a large DT score seems to put you right up there, seems like another award suited to midfielders/smalls which is especially unfair due to talls/KPs/rucks typically taking longer to develop.

My four nominations would be Heppell, Shuey, Zac Smith and Darling.

The fact that he is doing it as a key forward rather than as an outside mid/half-back.

Averaging 15 touches and 6 marks per week - laying tackles...has just been super. Heppell has been great as well (21 touches a week) - I am fine with that, but he is playing a much easier role in what is a much better side.

Libba is ahead in the key indicators for the modern game for mine, being contested ball, tackles and assists. I didn't see Hawthorn's game, but apparently Savage was one of the most influential players on the field.

Tough week to call it, and whilst it's a nice reward, young Libba is exceeding all expectations - I'm sure he's content becoming a best 22 player and having a real impact.

That's bloody hard to read.

I think the 14 Marks for Savage puts him in front unfortunately. :(

I hope I'm wrong.

The tackle count will get him over the line, Time on round also as the Hawks had only 2 emergencies so Savage had more time on the ground.

I know it's not all about stats but...

McKenzie: 17 kicks, 7 handballs, 5 marks, 7 tackles, 2 goals, 116 SC points
Bruest: 8 kicks, 8 handballs, 5 marks, 1 tackle, 2 goals, 65 SC points

* I know using SC points is a bit much but it gives some indication to efficiency and the like.

Bullshit if you ask me. Dahlhaus had much more effect than Batchelor did. For Christ sake's, he's leading the competition on pressure acts in the past 5 games, surely leading the comp on any stat should have you looked at?

Dahlhaus' is underrated by those who simply look at basic stats because his main strength is his pressure acts inside 50. It's huge in modern day footy but it doesn't get you SC points (I think anyway!) and it doesn't really make the stats page.

The Rising Star selectors obviously don't rate Trent McKenzie as much as I do.

'But it can be mystifying why a player is selected in any given week. Western Bulldogs football manager James Fantasia has called on the league to explain the criteria for Rising Star nominations.

"How do they decide? It would be good to have clarity around how they measure it, or who qualifies each week," Fantasia said.'

Well how does the whole thing work?
One is nominated per week on weekly effort,
Then one winner is selected out of the group of 22?????
So if one kid is above consistent all year and doesn't have one blinder of a game then he wont be nominated therefore can win???

The nominations procedure is ridiculous and is purely because of sponsorship of course, the almighty $
If you play well enough to receive a nomination you should get a nomination regardless of whether 15 players got one that same week or 1 did. So there will be rounds where people don't receive nominations, who friggen cares? (apart from the sponsors)
only nominate players who have had a pretty/really good game early in the season and then later in the season consistency can be rewarded as well. There is no reason why 5 players can't/shouldn't be nominated in the one week if they deserve it, just like someone shouldn't get handed a nomination just because they had an ok game while all the other rookies were crap that round.

There is so much i hate about the AFL these days :/

Selection criteria aside, I'm comfortable with Jake Batchelor's nomination this week. He's been pretty solid for the Tiger's down back for all of 2011, a gig that few would envy with their defence. If he was in Bulldog colours I'd be pretty miffed by now if he wasn't up there for a nomination. A few more games under his belt and holding his performance level will see young Dahlhaus get a nod pretty soon.

That's all well and good and I'm sure if you asked Dahlhaus he'd claim not to care. He might even pull out the “Brownlow Quote”, you know: “Oh, it'd be nice of course, it's an honour, but we're all about flags here at <insert team name>”

Fact is, these guys make a living from their profile as much as their footballing ability and it's not fair to the bloke that he's overlooked because he plays for the Dogs.

Gold Coast's Trent McKenzie becomes the 4th Sun nominated this year after his round 17 nomination. Of the 4 GC nominations 3 of them were pre listed by the Suns & the 4th, Swallow was taken with pick 1, meaning all 4 were unable to be drafted by any other club.

I just don't get it. As I've mentioned here, I'm a big fan of McKenzie but why this week? He got a fair bit of it but as you mention, he wasted it. Prestia and Gaff were both very good IMO.

It's confusing. Some weeks they go with the best performance of the week and in others they go with performances over a few weeks. There seems to be no actual method to it.

How the Rising Star is picked

THE AFL has admitted that not all games are necessarily viewed before a Rising Star nomination is selected each week.

The weekly Rising Star award nominations have raised eyebrows in recently, with Cat Allen Christensen unrewarded for a 25-possession, two-goal game against Brisbane in Round 17.

Christensen was recognised this week after notching up a further swag of possessions and a pair of goals against Richmond.

With only six rounds to go, young talent including Andrew Gaff, Tom Liberatore, Luke Dahlhaus, Nathan Vardy, Michael Hibberd, Alex Johnson, Ashley Smith, Liam Jones and Tom Lynch are yet to be nominated, and therefore not yet eligible to be crowned this year's Rising Star.

AFL operations manager Adrian Anderson said national talent manager Kevin Sheehan took sole responsibility for nominating a Rising Star each week.

Asked on 3AW if Sheehan had watched all eight games in time for the Monday morning meeting, Anderson said: “I don't know if he's watched all eight, how he keeps track of their performances, but he does (keep track).

“Not necessarily (that he would have to watch all eight games), he might talk to people whose opinion he respects, he looks at the stats, he speaks to the clubs.

“No one knows the young and emerging talent in the competition as well as Kevin Sheehan, to my knowledge.”

Anderson at times can come across as a complete numbat.

This is a farcical setup for a billion dollar industry that is promoted as an official AFL award with big corporate backing behind it.
What, so Kevin Sheehan has become his own AFL endorsed autonomous collective ?

Call it the Kevin Sheehan Award then.

btw Just to be a tad cynical but at last count that makes it 3 Geelong nominations so far this year, 4 if you include Jack Steven from the Falcons.

How many people would you recommend be involved?
There is no prize for being nominated other than an invite to a luncheon at the end of the year and a round of media interviews.

Clearly a flawed system and seemingly subject to lobbying the individual responsible, but what's the alternative?

How about an official at every match and then they get together for a quick discussion and pick a player. But to have someone not even see a player play and base it on stats is a joke.

As to your second question. More than one. Any element of bias or perceived bias needs to be removed.

There is certainly NO prospect of a prize for not being nominated.

Could they potentially do it based on the coaches votes? The coaches each give a 5,4,3,2,1 each week don't they? Could they give the rising star nomination to the highest polling player for the week that meets the eligibility criteria? That would mean it would go to the most influential rising star of the week. Again it would mean some players miss out, but it would be more reflective of their impact on the match.

It's a good idea Soupa, I guess the question is what is the fall back plan should no eligible player receive a vote in a particular week (which I'd imagine would happen reasonably regularly)?

It's a good idea Soupa, I guess the question is what is the fall back plan should no eligible player receive a vote in a particular week (which I'd imagine would happen reasonably regularly)?

That is an obvious flaw and my only solution is in the event that no eligible player records any votes for the round that weeks nomination goes to the next best performing elgibile player based on their efforts prior to that round. So say no one gets any votes in round 3, it would go to the player who has gotten the most votes from rounds 1 and 2, thus doing the whole "rewarding him for consistency" thing.

Another flaw is inequal matches. ie. In a close game there might be roughly half the votes from each coach (so 15/30 all up) allocated to each team. ie. there might be an equal spread of votes given to the two teams because thewy both played well and both had good players. However in a blowout 20-25 of the 30 votes might go to just one team, which could inflate a young players good performance in a blowout over a young players good performance in a close match, when the latter may be more worthy of the nomination.

And finally in my argument against myself there is also the issue that there will be players who will have the "votes" to earn the nomination for multiple weeks, so do you nominate them 2, 3, or 4 times or once nominated are theu struck from the pool.

As did Fasolo, who has been good for a few weeks now.

Scott Clayton will be nervously shuffling in his chair watching Gaff and Heppell tearing it up at senior level already. Super early days but he'd be hoping like hell that Sam Day, Harley Bennell and Josh Caddy start to improve rapidly in the next couple of seasons, as Gaff and Heppell (and Swallow) look every bit the standouts of last year's crop. Richmond selecting Conca ahead of Heppell is also a cause for concern at this early stage. Polec was the only other non GC selection before Heppell and he looked a very smooth mover before getting injured this season.

Gaff is a dead set gun. Going to be a great player in a few years time. Still pretty raw.

Where/when was Fasolo drafted? He's been extremely impressive since making his debut. The fact that Collingwood can still find guns with later picks is a credit to them. I know it's easier to play for such a good side, but he has literally forced his way in.

He kicked a bag of goals in his sixth game. Pretty impressive around the ground too, he moves with a lot of confidence (yes, probably because he's playing in a good team) and definitely looks the goods with both skill AND effort — a good mix.

If Butcher qualifies he will win this week.

Not sure about that. There are a few options IMO.

If they want to go down the consistency route they have Fasolo (19p, 2g) or Libba (27p, 6t)

Tutt had 26 possessions and kicked 4 goals and Butcher had 6 goals from 6 possessions. Tutt was definitely better IMO. He got more of it, used it really well but more importantly, he was the star player in the only 15 minutes that really mattered.

My point was its who the media choose, Listening to the commentators they went off Tutt and Butcher sounded like he was heaps better on the day by the end of the game.

Is Tutt going to get the credit he deserves for this game?
Riewoldt could have 30 bad games and one good one and the press are all over what a champ he is.
Some players are favourites, will Tutt be one,?
Did you catch Macavaney I think it was said it then realised what he said, oh if Tutt had blonde hair and was 6 foot he would be a champ now...then back peddled oh im not saying he isnt a good looking kid etc etc.

Why? I know they base it on a few games, but why hasn't Libba got a nomination. He has racked up some big possessions this season and had a very good game on Sunday with 27 disposals, 6 tackles.

If you compare the two players so far this season:

* Libba average disposals 18.4 versus 12.4
* Tackles 5.1 to 2.9
* Contested possession, 11.0 to 6.4
* Clearances 2.9 to .9

The only area Fasolo beats Libba on is goals, 1.4 to .3, but Libba beats him on goal assists, ie .8 to .4.

Its all a bloody joke and as Chops says Collingwood fans would sook if they didn't give it to him.

Every single club's fan forums would be putting forth their young guns and asking the same thing. Fasolo deserves a nomination. I'm not saying he deserves it more than Libba, and it's a travesty that Libba doesn't have one, but the real problem is in the selection process, not the selection. There should be a panel to pick the RS, and there should be flexibility to allow more than one pick each round.

Not from a high profile club, and hasn't played a full year. I don't think he's in the running at all.

And?

Boyd had 36 disposals on Saturday, Jones had 14 - who was more effective?

Sam Reid who everyone is going 'ga-ga' over averages just 0.8 a disposal per game more than Jones over the course of the season, but Liam leads him marks (only just) and is much higher up the ranking in contested marks.... I guess Liam hasn't had that one 3 or 4 goal game which would tip him over, but Shifter would probably miss that one anyway.

Anyway like the rest of the awards handed out all the flogs who judge them look at are stats which are becoming more and more irrelevant by the day.

Jack Darling is another who the media is drooling over, he averages 2.5 possessions more per game and has kicked a whopping 2 more goals for the season, in a team that'll finish top 4. Some people are even talking about him winning it.

I think the award should go to Darling. To me the only real contender is Swallow...both played key roles from 1st game to last.

Heppell? Fine - but much easier to play on a flank than at CHF or as an inside mid.

I think Liber and Jones both deserve nominations, but don't really care that they haven't got them...if Luke Shuey is eligible in his 3rd year (basically because he couldn't get a game in the first two) then so should Chris Yarren and Jackson Trengrove who have had much better seasons...

As an aside, the 2008 draft was crap with a capital 'C'.

I think Jones definitely deserves a nomination he wouldn't go close to getting one considering Kevin Sheahan or however picks it just looks in the newspaper to see the stats for most games.

The biggest issue I have with the award is that it doesn't follow it's name/purpose. It's the 'Rising Star'. I think it should be awarded to the most promising player. Instead I believe it is more like the 'Best player under 21 and 10 games' award.

Jones is a young KP forward who doesn't rack up stats but he shows wonderful signs in the areas that matter. Liam doesn't get 20 easy touches or kick 3-4 goals against Port but is 6th in the league for total contested marks this season (only 3 off 3rd and 5 off 2nd).

This is seriously something wrong with the 'Rising Star' award when a kid who has the 6th highest amount of contested marks in the league not only doesn't get a Rising Star nom but probably didn't even get close to it.

The Brownlow is the award for mids and the Rising Star is the award for flankers/outside runners.

According to Swans fans, Alex Johnson has been holding down CHB for most of the season and has rarely been beaten. He would also be nowhere near a nomination due to not being an outside running mid or a flanker.

Really?

Watts, Naitanui, Hill, Hartlett, Hurley, Yarran, Rich, Vickery, Ziebell, Davis, Sidebottom Shuey, Suban, Beams, Hannebery, Robinson, Anthony, Sloane, and Savage. (Not to mention future superstars Cordy, Roughead and Jones :D )

That's 19 blokes who should all eventually be (some perhaps aren't far off) solid or better players. I'd say it's about on par with most drafts thus far, with potentially a pretty big list of elite, top end players.

Yep, it's the worst thing about the Rising Star. I mentioned Jones being 6th overall for contested marks. He also has missed two games, with only 2 players ahead of him averaging more contested marks per game. Along with Sam Reid, he is surrounded by mature bodies on the list. It's crazy, crazy stuff to not have him in the top 24 rising stars of 2011.

Tom Liberatore is even more crazy. A first year player playing as an inside midfielder and STILL getting the stats they normally love.
