With an icy mist spilling out over the top of the space age tubular pod, ONE40Below’s Cryosauna at Whitten Oval looks like something from a sci-fi movie. But instead of being ‘teleported’ to some far off planet, this futuristic technology gives aches and pains the cold shoulder in record time.
The modern equivalent of plunging into an ice bath after an intense training session or game, the Cryosauna aligns with the I.C.E method - Immobilise, Cool and Elevate - used by athletes and their trainers to aid recovery and boost performance.
The machine blasts the user with up to three minutes of liquid nitrogen so that, within seconds of firing up, the temperature plummets to an Arctic minus 140 degrees. This instant drop cools the body down to help in ways that include aiding pain relief, rejuvenating sore muscles and easing joint discomfort.
And while no polar bears have dropped by the Footscray West location just yet, Western Bulldogs players now regard the Cryosauna an important part of their training program. Young forward Andrew Hooper, the first player in 25 years to debut in a final, says the Cryosauna has been well received by the team, especially midfielder Mitch Wallis. “Mitchy loves it. He’s been in four or five times - we can’t get in there,” he jokes.
On a more serious note, Hooper explains why the treatment is so important to the team’s results. “Recovery is very important to us so whatever we can do to get the body right for the next day, we do it.”
And it’s not just elite footballers like the Western Bulldogs who can benefit from the cooling effects of ONE40Below’s Cryosauna.
