This is the discussion thread for our Sunday twilight game against Carlton at ES.

My predictions are:

The Dogs by 14 points
BOG : Adam Cooney
Daniel Giansiracusa to kick the first goal

LostDoggy

I've picked Carlton by around 25ish

However, If the dogs back line can get something rolling then I believe the mids and fwds will do enough.
A big 'if' though.

Running the rule over the Carton Forward line and Midfield

Betts - 65% disposal efficiency,11 goal assists,50 tackles,88% goal kick efficiency, 27 goals
Kreuzer - 70% DE , 4 GA , 16 T , 24% GKE , 2 goals
Walker - 71% DE , 10 GA , 37 T , 83% GKE , 36 goals
Houlihan - 71% DE , 4 GA , 10 T , 11% GKE , no goals
Waite - 64% DE , 12 GA , 22 T , 66% GKE ,27 contested marks, 16 goals
Garlett - 59% DE , 7 GA , 58 T , 84% GKE , 35 goals

Betts and Garlett are the small fast defensive/ offensive cornerstones , roving and crumbing the specialty, Walker has added to the mix with his ability to find space , Waite is the tall target his contested marking the linchpin to their F50 movement , Kreuzer and Houlihan are the weakest links and can be pressured into making mistakes , the use of a tight mobile defensive screen at the top of the F50 the key to stopping them finding targets , quick fast accurate ball movement the key to breaking the press on the rebound, the use of Griffen dropping back as the extra man will be key

Gibbs - 76% disposal efficiency, 226 kicks , 96 handballs , 45 tackles , 103 marks, 9 contested marks , 49 rebound 50,s , 9 goal assist
Judd - 67% DE , 173 K , 198 HB , 90 T , 38 M , 2 CM , 62 inside 50,s , 20 GA
Simpson - 70% DE , 198 K , 93 HB , 54 T ,73 M , 3 CM , 69 I 50,s , 13 GA
Murphy - 73% DE , 230 K , 174 HB , 68 T , 66 M , 1 CM , 59 I 50,s ,10 GA
Robinson - 68% DE , 179 K , 111 HB ,50 T, 41 clangers , 75 M ,8 CM , 58 I 50,s , 5 GA

The most obvious point is their ability to break laterally to find space . Gibbs drops back as the extra man and finds space his rebound 50,s a key to their switch of play , Ward is the best man on man matchup to shut him down . Judd is the stat monster, his enormous workrate tight in the contests then working forward to create goals has to be contained Picken has to work him over like he did to Ablett , Simpson works as the 3rd link and works across the ground to create angles to get the ball forward , Murphy works as the 2nd link with Judd dangerous as he ducks his head to get free kicks he has 38 frees for tackles have to be hard and low , Robinson gets on the defensive side of the contest and is the weakest link in their midfield put pressure on him and he makes mistakes

Tough game but we can break their two level press ( 1st level Betts , Garlett and Walker I 50) ( 2nd level Judd, Simpson, Murphy top of the 50 ) by quick accurate ball movement , players will have to work hard to create space to provide targets , any delays in decision making will give them too much time to block/ cover spaces ,we have to stay with our zones and not have players pulled in close to the contest , we have to finish the 1ST quarter very strongly to break up any momentum they might be trying build , the same with the start of the 3RD come out hard and shut down their lateral movement and hurt them on the scoreboard

BoG: Griff

edit: Hill is out sub, fairly sensible, however i'm surprised at Carlton's moves. AJ for Carazzo, no injury mentioned. AJ was their primary tagger but has barely played this year. And Russell as the sub? surprising to say the least. First time he's been in that role i believe

Sounds like Jones is doing well.

He is, has taken some good strong grabs and kicked a goal.

Getting carved up by the umpires.
Absolutely appalling...what I want to know is, has Chamberlain always been a Blues fan, or is it a new thing? He's shocking. Our blokes have to have blood spilt to get a free apparently.

Tom Williams doing really well too IMO, good positioning and reading the play well.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
10-07-2011, 06:16 PM
Jones' hands have been good.
Pretty even spread of performers so far. All players seem focused and working hard.
Early days obviously, but I am surprised. I expected the Blues to really hurt us early on.
Razor Ray has been horrible, paid against Hudson when he first tapped it from the ruck but then grabbed it afterwards and was tackled before getting a handball away. I thought the rule was only holding the ball if a ruck immediately took possession from the ruck and was tackled? Cost us a goal.
Then missed free kicks within 20 metres of our goal to Dahlhaus and Gia whilst missing an obvious throw by Mitch Robinson who did the old one handed handpass.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

Tom Williams doing really well too IMO, good positioning and reading the play well.

One of his most confident starts to date. Backing himself one on one and has taken a couple of good overhead marks under pressure, whilst as you say holding his position against Waite very well.

Umps always look at stats and even them up! Hopefully for us a few inside 50,

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
10-07-2011, 06:19 PM

LostDoggy
10-07-2011, 06:19 PM
Equal with the tackles 16 to 17
Loosing the frees 1 to 7
Kept Judd quiet
Picken on Murphy doing well
We just have to shut down Gibbs
We have made them play contested ball and they don,t enjoy that

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
10-07-2011, 06:21 PM
And Hooper getting thrown without the ball

On Hooper, it looks like his sole job is to keep presenting as a decoy and run Yarran to a standstill. Interesting to see if he's got the tank to keep it up. But I like the ploy hopefully wearing him down and blunting his run out of the back half.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

AndrewP6
10-07-2011, 06:25 PM
IMO a 50m penalty for taking 2 steps over the mark is absurd. Far too harsh for a minor infringement that in reality has no impact on the opponent.

Ditto on the Murphy free. To me, it's a case of little men making sure we know they're still in charge.
Now the goose tries to make up for it in our backline.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

LostDoggy
10-07-2011, 07:02 PM
Great 4 goal comeback after the umpires intervened
Solid pressure , we have denied them the space they need for their zones
We have again stuck to the gameplan to hit targets by foot , only 53 handpasses to their 98
We have had 50 less disposals but have moved the ball better
Ward and Wood having an impact
We have a very good spread of players who have been involved , good solid team play
Carlton are frustrated by the lack of space , if we can increase the pressure we will break them
Gibbs is the one player we must shut down, they need his rebound

Whilst Hooper hasn't had a possy and Reid only 4, they have helped keep the ball inside their with their harrassing. Carlton haven't been able to exploit them coming out of defense, so I'm not unhappy with the set up so far. Be interesting if their are no injuries whether Hill comes on at some stage.

Behind on the handballs 114 to 183
Behind on the hitouts 34 to 62
Marks and kicks almost dead level
Nailed them by 27

Just a great team win , the spread of disposals says it all , we shut down their ability to spread and find space , they just could,nt handle the pressure , we just broke them down , we were able to lift our pressure , they had nothing , by shutting down their midfield forward push their forward line was rendered useless

And as much as some think Hall is past it, his presence is helping our kids out, you can even see Hall is running out to let Hooper, Cooney, Dalhaus have space when the ball hits the ground and run in.

He's still got some left in the tank. 4 goals, the ability to chase seems to be back, and some great marks.

Tremendous win today! That's the Dogs we've missed most of this year. Great pressure, chasing, better decisions. Some great work from the Pups too. Sticking it to Carlton is terrific.

Still bummed I couldn't make it.

Unfortunately am interstate this weekend, so while thrilled we won, shattered that I wasn't there to see a great win. Still glad that many on here sound like they were there cheering the boys on. Keep the reports coming, really want to know how the game unfolded at least until I can get a copy of the replay.

Well done Dogs.

Once again, our contested ball v uncontested ball ratio is very interesting. We're very efficient at the moment and our ability to score heavily without huge numbers of uncontested ball bodes well for finals style footy (IMHO).

Look forward to comments from those who were there re: Hooper and Hill's games.

We would have rolled over 6 weeks ago when we were 27 pts down and getting bent over by that bald prick in yellow, but we gritted our teeth and toughed it out.

Our backline was great, all our match ups worked a treat.

Bar Picken on Murphy but I don't know if Murphy is taggable anymore.

However we were all worried about the backline match ups and

Wood embarrassed Walker.
Murphy killed Gartlett.
Morris smashed Betts.

And Griffen well beaten in the first qtr was released in a great move by Eade.

Incredible roller coaster of a game !!!!!!!!!!
Behind on the tackles 82 to 93
Behind on the disposals 312 to 382
Behind on the handballs 114 to 183
Behind on the hitouts 34 to 62
Marks and kicks almost dead level
Nailed them by 27

Just a great team win , the spread of disposals says it all , we shut down their ability to spread and find space , they just could,nt handle the pressure , we just broke them down , we were able to lift our pressure , they had nothing , by shutting down their midfield forward push their forward line was rendered useless

Almost in the 8 !!!!!!!!!!

Don't you mean that those two Carlton supporters shouldn't be umpiring a Carltoooon game? I was just shaking my head most of the night, trying to figure out what the frees and 50 metre penalties were for??????

I mentioned i had good free seats before the game, but wow, best i've ever had at a game.
Row A on the wing behind the Carlton bench on level 2. The guy behind me had a yell to Mitch Robinson who turned around and thought it came from his bench.
Back to the game, god was i happy.
Williams, Wood and Dale were just brilliant. Wood destroyed Walks and Williams was just awesome. Imagine if we ever got a proper Lake back there... not very confident on that this season though

Hooper has the biggest tank for a little fatboy. Great pressure, held Yarran and got one of his goals from out-running his man. Getting the second proper crumming work was great as well and for the first time, he looked like he really has a place in the league. Very happy with that, it's been a long time since we've had a proper small crumber and now we've nearly got 2.

Hudson was brilliant as stated, Griff has a ripper last quarter and it's so good to have a fitter Coons running again.

Vespa possibly deserves a game and what happens with Barlow? pending matchups against North, Stack might be a chance as well.

Also Ratten, thanks a lot for playing Bower forward and Hendo back. Worked a treat. I also enjoyed Russell as the sub, particularly when you drop Tuohey and Carrazo while playing AJ as a back. brilliant.

Another fun fact about Carlton. While we have beaten the same amount of top 8 teams, atleast we beat a top 4 team

I'm rapt with the performance today! Finally we seem to have adopted the forward press and it's paying dividends. I will admit that i was calling for Eade's head earlier this year but he has won me back. great effort.

Hooper - he may not have had a lot of the ball but he along with Dahlhaus add a great dynamic to our fwd line. he seemed to work had too.

Williams was really good, one of his best games.

I thought Markovic was pretty good even though im generally not massive fan of him.

Dogs by 19 points
First Goal Gia ( free kick )
BOG Ward

Well , I got a few points right anyway  ( OK not the score , FG or BOG )

Higgins of the HBF has been very good. Wasn't as good last night as he has been in the past two weeks but he did some slick work, missed a chance to seal the game which was frustrating. Generally, the move down back has seen him rack up a lot of ball and start to have some positive impact on the game. Massive improvement really, given as a forward this season he has given us zilch.

Its interesting that he looks to be running free, unencumbered by injury etc. Maybe coming off half back he doesn't need to turn so often, taking the pressure of his groin? Or maybe he really was just in shit form until a few weeks ago and injuries were not an issue.

Anyway, if he kicks that goal I rate his game a B+, he didn't so he can have a C.

Watching the match for the first time now. I only saw pieces in the last 3 weeks for various reasons so it's good to see.

Just before half time but thoughts:

* Reid whilst not getting a lot of the ball was important for us in the first half. His attack on the footy in the forward line was a real asset. Lots of hitting and tackling and 1 or 2 resulted in a goal.

* Hooper does some smart things. his stats to HT have been highlighted here but he created a goal with a tap off the ground to Ward - > Cooney -> Gia -> Griffen "off the ground". it was just a really intelligent piece of play that gets no stats.

* Williams looked on from the first minute. Lots of confidence in himself and I think that is the only thing he lacks.

* Oh forgot to add, how can anyone not love The Doll House.

I finally got to watch it. For two and a bit quarters, we played better than I recall for a long time.

For years, I'd watch the ball just ping back out of our forward line. Yesterday it didn't, and our young forwards, normally hunted by defenders became the hunters.

Loved that. Almost by accident we seem to have a nice balance between old war horses like Hall and Gia and keen young chaps like Dollhouse, Jones and the WeeMan.

I like the way the last three hunt with intent.

That play was mentioned on I think ABC and how the coaching staff hearts would be in their mouths as he has no regard or fear for his personal safety even though the game was won.

Im glad over the last few weeks we as a forum are starting to recognise how well he has actually played this year.
