Al Paton - Herald Sun - 7 September

CALLAN Ward has acknowledged a massive pay rise was a major factor in his decision to leave the Bulldogs for Greater Western Sydney.

The Giants this morning unveiled their first two uncontracted signings - Ward and former Docker Rhys Palmer.

The Dogs offered Ward a deal in the region of $450,000 a year, but could not match the $800,000-plus on offer from GWS.

"That was obviously a factor that came into my decision," Ward said today at his first media appearance as a Giants player.

If you can stomach it - press conference here. Essendon and Kevin Sheedy get a mention.

After viewing that it would seem GWS are committed to a 'Big Hair' policy.

There is some serious P.R. work going into GWS.

All this breakfast point garbage for one, also there was the scripted responses from Ward and......the other guy (yes it's Rhys Palmer but seriously he must of felt like the poor cousin). I would hardly say that there is amazing talent there already, but it seemed to be the automatic first response that came out of their mouths. "Got some really good talent here......" How would they even know? Ward and Palmer have literally stepped off the plane, and then the limosine.

Can't wait to hear what Ward has to say for himself on the radio tonight.
He will be on SEN after 6pm to explain himself. I'm tipping he is really looking forward to playing with all the talent they have up there in GWS.

Well, they have got some super talent. All those 93 birthday kids they took last year? Think David Swallow at the Gold Coast - those are the kids they already have. Ugle and Wilson and Treloar and and and...

There is definitely a lot of talent there.

I wonder if Cal will be regretting his decision in 5 years time when the Giants are playing in front of 2000 people at Blacktown, and being beaten by 20 goals every week - still looking for their first ever win.

So far they have Ward, Rhys Palmer, Dean Brogan, Chad Cornes, Phil Davis and Issy Folau - they will make the 1987 Brisbane Bears look like the 2001 - 2003 Brisbane Lions.

Just heard Callan On Sen and 3Aw pretty hard to dislike him to be honest just sounds like a Great kid
although if he is going to be GWs Capatain better get some media training.
Gerard asked him if he sees himself playing the rest of his career up there didnt really give a answer which may suggest he is taking the cash for now and come back in 5 years.
I will not name the Player but Last Week at Training this was mentioned to me by the player .

5 years is a long time. Plenty of things can happen so I would not hold my breath.

I remember Leigh Colbert went to the Geelong B&F after he announced he was going to North. A very frosty reception from the faithful which was no doubt made much worse because he was the captain.

Whilst the function is about the season just past and recognising the players it is also about the future and Ward's appearance would really depress the sponsors and members by reminding them about what we have lost.

Finally some honety in this whole sordid mess.

I think if Callan had just been honest and said fromt he start, the month is too good to refuse I'm going to take it, rather than dicking everyone around I'd have a little more respect.

That said, time to move on. He is GWS's problem now.

I watched that thinking I'd come a fraction closer to understanding some reasoning other the the cash, how he could turn his back on us. Didn't work.

Good riddance.

Interestingly, the Dogs website still has clips and images on Baz, and still has Huddo and Hall in the current Player's list. Ward was gone not long after confirmation of him selling out.
