Re: 2011 - NAB Rising Star
Quote:
AFL operations manager Adrian Anderson said national talent manager Kevin Sheehan took sole responsibility for nominating a Rising Star each week.
Asked on 3AW if Sheehan had watched all eight games in time for the Monday morning meeting, Anderson said: “I don't know if he's watched all eight, how he keeps track of their performances, but he does (keep track).
“Not necessarily (that he would have to watch all eight games), he might talk to people whose opinion he respects, he looks at the stats, he speaks to the clubs.
“No one knows the young and emerging talent in the competition as well as Kevin Sheehan, to my knowledge.”
Anderson at times can come across as a complete numbat.
This is a farcical setup for a billion dollar industry that is promoted as an official AFL award with big corporate backing behind it.
What, so Kevin Sheehan has become his own AFL endorsed autonomous collective ?
Call it the Kevin Sheehan Award then.
btw Just to be a tad cynical but at last count that makes it 3 Geelong nominations so far this year, 4 if you include Jack Steven from the Falcons.

The league has 24 hours after the completion of each round to nominate each week.
How many people would you recommend be involved?
There is no prize for being nominated other than an invite to a luncheon at the end of the year and a round of media interviews.
Clearly a flawed system and seemingly subject to lobbying the individual responsible, but what's the alternative?

How about an official at every match and then they get together for a quick discussion and pick a player. But to have someone not even see a player play and base it on stats is a joke.

Doesn't sound like it's the League, whoever that may be, it reads that it is Kevin Sheehan with sole responsibility.
As to your second question. More than one. Any element of bias or perceived bias needs to be removed.
There is certainly NO prospect of a prize for not being nominated.

The most notable thing for me is that only 3 of the top 10 (or 4 of the top 15) gave been given the gong.
Re: 2011 - NAB Rising Star
I am backing Libber this week.

They were drafted in 2008... they shouldn't be eligible given that they have had 3 pre-seasons in the AFL system.
The whole competition is a joke.... made even more so by todays article.

Completely agree Mantis after 3 preseasons you should be getting a game or off the list by then anyway.
Rising star I would have thought at least a few good games in your first season.
I had respect for Kevin over the years but now I am not sure where he gets the "god" title on young guns after seeing whats gone on this year.
Must admit I am sick of hearing in every carnival the same bland comments from him every year.
Re: 2011 - NAB Rising Star
They could have the club presidents or proxy's give votes on the opposition young players at the games they attend and then tally them up at the end of the year like a junior brownlow.
Re: 2011 - NAB Rising Star
If Kevin Sheehan is as good as spotting talent why hasn't a club hired him?

Definitely prefer Jeff Kennett & Greg Westaway giving votes than Kevin Sheehan............
Re: 2011 - NAB Rising Star
Could they potentially do it based on the coaches votes? The coaches each give a 5,4,3,2,1 each week don't they? Could they give the rising star nomination to the highest polling player for the week that meets the eligibility criteria? That would mean it would go to the most influential rising star of the week. Again it would mean some players miss out, but it would be more reflective of their impact on the match.

It's a good idea Soupa, I guess the question is what is the fall back plan should no eligible player receive a vote in a particular week (which I'd imagine would happen reasonably regularly)?
