So they have to do as well as they can in the time they have. On the other hand, football is a very tight knit community.
I have no doubt were he to pull on a Bulldogs jumper, the general fans would love him again. Then again there are rusted on supporters who would never forgive him in their hearts, and I think I'm one.
That's a pretty reasonable statement. But as a player, sentimentality won't buy me a house or secure my future.

Sam Darley playing for Richmond's VFL side, Ayce Cordy for Williamstown. Daniel Pearce lining up for Templestowe.

Unfortunately for us, it was a perfect storm of circumstances that will never be repeated - and even then we can only blame our incompetence for Ward still being out of contract at the time GWS swooped.
It was a golden ticket for him, and by the sounds of it he might be offered another golden ticket next year.
Fair point Sedat.
But Charlie Bucket can wave his Golden Ticket to someone like Carlscum and Melbum IMO.
Would rather us chase someone like J.Omera from Gold Coke who can give us abit of outside run and Pizzaz
;)

Was it because of contractual obligations?

If you take all the emotion, history and romance out of the Callan Ward discussion.
You have to ask..would he be the best way to spend that money.
Is he what we need for the money the market would demand for him.
I would have to say no.
With Libba, Wallis, Stevens, Dalhaus, Bont, Stringer, Hunter, Macrae, Daniel, Hrovat, Dunkley and Jong (and Clay Smith hopefully) all lined up for future midfield roles. I just don't think Ward offers enough difference to what we already have there. I'll agree he's a great player but he won't be filling a need for us as much as someone else on the same money could.
Re: Following our ex's...................
Ward is a gun.
Guns make your team better.
I would take Ward back.
Re: Following our ex's...................
A very good KPD will make our team better than a gun midfielder.
Re: Following our ex's...................
Ward is a better player than all but maybe one of the players listed who we could consider genuine inside midfielders.
A case for getting a bloke in to be your best inside midfielder can easily be made.

The romance might affect the money he demands. It may be from his end wanting to come back moreso than our end wanting to get him back

I am in the no category for one reason and it was an article on him as a bulldog. Cal asked his dad why they didn't follow the doggies dads response was "the Bulldogs will break your heart son". He then proceeded to break bulldog hearts himself as a bloke and a player I really like him but not at my club!! My heart grows strong but it never ever forgets.

Just on this subject, Rick Olarenshaw's mother passed away a couple of days back. She remained a staunch Doggies girl right to the end. A great effort. God bless her pure soul!
