Re: Hawthorn racism review
I have to admit that I was somewhat surprised Hodge wasn't able to read the room here.
In many ways though his statement is representative of what can be the 'best' part of being at a footy club. Your mates at the club will have your back/support you even when you have done the wrong thing. We have seen countless examples of this over the years and I'm pretty sure Collingwood just rewarded one recalcitrant with a very large 5x year contracts and their coach joked about his misdeeds during his b+f speech...I mean, it's all fun and games when you are winning games of footy.
What everyone in the club bubble forgets though is there's a big wide world outside of the club, and not everyone in that world values winning the contested footy stats over and above 'everything else' that is happening...and quite literally everyone gets dragged into that bubble. If you think back (again with Collingwood) to the docco series a couple of years back, really only Brodie Grundy seemed able to separate life from football - certainly the coaches seemed unable too, Adam Treloar seemed unable too etc etc.
I understand 100% the criticism that Hodge is copping right now and it is 100% tone deaf - but all he has tried to do is say some positive things about his mates who are genuinely under fire for things he simply cannot relate too. What he should have said was he stands with his First Nations team-mates and whilst he will ALWAYS support (for example) Alistair Clarkson the person and will be in his debt for life, he cannot support the actions that have been reported by the ABC...that he only wishes he knew what was going on and wishes he had been the type of leader who better connected with ALL his team-mates...but he doesn't know how to do that.
Whereas the Clarko statement read as if he had paid someone to write it, Hodge's message was simply a 'I want to show support for my friend' letter that I would say he wrote independently...I for one can't crucify him for that.
Re: Hawthorn racism review
I don't doubt his intentions but he really needs to stand back from this outside of letting his former team mates that he is available to chat. A lot of ex footballers are good in the media but they might never be media savvy.
He should leave this to the club and the AFL to sort through.

Are you really though? Hodge is a straight up white bread footy head cashed up bogan.
Inability to read a room is expected, but he is a "top bloke ho ho ho calls it as he sees it honest as the day is long" type of guy.
To be honest, he'll probably be promoted to channel 7's head commentator for his brave stance.
Re: Hawthorn racism review
The situation definitely needs more Kennett.
Kennett doubles down on criticism of Indigenous former Hawthorn players
https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/...02-p5bmk6.html
Kennett said on Friday that the decision of the former players to tell their story through the ABC was “unfair to those” they had accused. And on Sunday he told radio station 3AW that the AFL “has a process in place that could have resolved this confidentially and in the interests of all parties.
“But the families, who have been involved themselves in a confidential process, went and spoke to the ABC and sadly, having asked for – and we respected the confidentiality of them and their names – they then went and named those they had grievances with. And that took the process to a different level.”
Maybe, just maybe Jeff, the possibility that this would have been kept confidential in a typical AFL quasi-process was exactly the reason why these people worked with the ABC to get the story out?
It's clear you, the club and the AFL would have preferred to stage manage this closely, don't pretend otherwise. Idiot.
Re: Hawthorn racism review
Clearly the strategy from all those accused is to make the issue about ‘process’ and ‘media’ and not the actual serious issues involved. While activating media support from names like Dunkley, Hodge etc.
Don’t expect any positive change folks. These people will have offered up all their fears, insecurities, trauma, emotional scarring and made themselves vulnerable for no apparent benefit or improvement. Just plain sad really for another missed opportunity, and more people left wrecked in carnage of a powerful machine.
Now we wait for the next event and hear about the change that will come as a result.
Then wait for the next event.
Then wait for the next event.

AFL HOPING TO FINALISE RACISM REPORT BY END OF 2022, NAMES FOUR-PERSON PANEL
The AFL has named the independent four-person panel which will be tasked with fully investigating racism allegations levelled against Hawthorn.
Bernard Quinn KC will head the panel and be joined experienced barristers Jacqualyn Turfrey, Julie Buxton and Tim Goodwin.
In a lengthy statement, the AFL said they were hoping to finalise the investigation by December, with the report and recommendations to be made public.
AFL General Counsel Andrew Dillon said it was vital that the panel worked independently of the AFL and included people with diverse backgrounds.
“These are very serious allegations, and it is important that we have an independent panel that is able to hear the perspectives of all involved and to provide natural justice to those making the claims and those who have had claims made against them,” he said in the AFL statement.
“It is also vitally important that the panel is able to complete its work independently of the AFL.
“Bernard Quinn KC, the chair of the independent investigation and panel members Jacqualyn Turfrey, Julie Buxton and Tim Goodwin are all eminently qualified barristers that will be able to provide their intellect and significant expertise to the process.
“The four-person panel, with their diverse backgrounds including in respect of Ms Turfrey and Mr Goodwin as First Nations persons will also have the ability to bring in additional outside expertise, whether that be in cultural safety, football administration or any other area the panel believes extra resource is needed.”
Brisbane coach Chris Fagan remains on a period of leave from the club after being named in the ABC report, while incoming North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson’s start date at his new club has also been delayed.

"The appointed independent panel, assisted by the law firm Gordon Legal, will now work with the above representatives on undertaking a culturally safe process that provides due process and natural justice to those who have made claims and those against whom allegations have been made, with the intention of providing a report in December 2022," the statement said"

Damien Barrett raised an interesting point asking why did they choose the period of 2008 to 2016? Why not further back and why not all the day to present day?
