Is Hrovat in our top 30 players next season?
I'm not so sure.
He's behind a number of players both up forward and through the middle. Whilst I hope we keep him and believe he has a lot of improvement in him, it's going to be very difficult to cement a spot in our side and we're going to be adding more competition again this year.
His value is quite low, too. If there's a big push from a few clubs it may move up a little, but an early third round selection would be a good outcome for us.
Via Andrew McDougall on @traderadio - Dogs premiership def Joel Hamling "still weighing up a few things." Decision Freo v Dogs by end of week.
We are not really traders:
Quote:
Only three Bulldogs premiership players were trades (Boyd, Joel Hamling and Shane Biggs). Fourteen of them were recruited by Dalrymple and five by Scott Clayton who preceded him in the role before moving to Gold Coast.
The contributions this year of five Clayton-recruited players also reflects something that Emma Quayle pointed out last week: the Dogs retained mature talent and enjoyed the quickest draft-led bounce or rebuild of any team - from preliminary finalists to finals five years later and premiers in the sixth. All while the new expansion teams were diluting the drafts. link
Is it odd that none of the guys speculated to be leaving us have nominated clubs publicly yet?
We are if players request trades. Hrovat & Stevens sound like they're gone with multiple clubs into both, Hamling still is 50/50 and Honeychurch might attract some interest. How we turn those into winning trades for us is vital. Either into players or better picks with GCS in a draft points trade.
It's mostly semantics but Hrovat was a first round pick at 21, due to draft concessions.
I think he has shown to be an AFL quality player when on the park, and his injury issues have been mostly traumatic rather than soft tissue IIRC.
Freeman never got fit enough to play a game, having the same issues with the same hamstring for two years. That risk justifies a drop.
Our second rounder is 39, I'd be very disappointed if we got less than that for Hrovat.
North got pick 32 for Wells and hours after that some reports were that they were also into Hrovat. Might be wrongly adding up 2+2, but that could well generate an offer on Hrovat for 32. That's a good result for them, Essendon have 40 & Carlton 43. Unless GCS come on strong with their interest at pick 29 or higher, North's pick 32 might be the highest offer we get.
We are in the enviable position of being the premiers, so the value of our fringe players is at it's highest.
Also if you are a fringe player why would you want to leave a premiership team? only reasons would be for opportunity and $$$.
I think Hamling would like to stay but if the price is right will go to Freo. All parties are waiting for other deals involving Freo to be done to see what they have to offer Hammer and the bulldogs.
Hrovat having multiple clubs after him is a bonus for us. We can simply sit back and watch the bidding war. For the right price i'd have no hesitation in trading him. He is a decent player but not in our best 22, we need to trade fringe players that we don't believe will improve into the 22 for fresh talented kids. Put it this way, if we could trade Hrovat for another possible Dunkley quality player in this years draft we would all do the deal straight away. I'd back Dalrymple in with his record.
Devil's advocate: Hrovat's a player who hasn't really proven himself as being AFL best 22 quality in his 4 years at the club. The counter that he would have if not for injuries raises questions about his durability and presents a risk if picking him up. Therefore a pick in the 30s or a pick upgrade elsewhere would be the best offer unless dealing with the Suns and their glut of picks.
Yep, if North parted with their compo pick 32 we are in a position to go to GCS with a trade of a package of our first three picks of 18, 32 & 39 to GCS for 22, 23 & 29 with Honeychurch (draft points trade primarily, 280 point differential means Honey costs them pick 50 or so in points). If we could target Essendon's likely pick for Hibberd, pick 28, with Stevens (& either picks 62 and 74 and/or a future picks trade similar to what we did with Carlton last year). Four picks in the 20's, two lots back to back, would be a wet dream for Dalrymple in an even draft.
Outs: Minson, Prudden, Stevens, Hrovat & Honeychurch and Picks 18, 32, 39, 62, 74 & 75
Ins: Cloke, pick 22, 23, 28, 29
