Re: 2023 AFL Finals Series
My reaction to the GF. Pies were best team all year and deserved to win. Lions were gallant in defeat but could not get the job done after snatching back the lead with 5 minutes to go. Collingwood took its chance when it absolutely HAD to.
Where does this leave us? I think we have deficiencies that we must address - pace and fitness. We just don't break the lines as Collingwood does.
Style - they keep the balling moving forward in any way they can and use the corridor more. They back themselves and play a more attacking game. We need to emulate that as it gets the ball inside forward 50 quicker and when it gets there the forward line is more open.
We badly need small forwards who regularly kick goals.
I think we showed this year that we are some way off. I see Sam Darcy and JOD as rays of hope. Get them up and about and solid performances from ALL the usual suspects then we are capable of taking a big step forward. But time is running out.

If the Dogs were to win next year you just know that good guy Dunks would go to the 2016 reunioun AND sneak into the 2024 reunion.

I really do not know what McGrath has done to warrant the number 1 pick . His played off half back and really has not dominanted similar to likes of Docharty, stewart even Tuohy
I hope they put him on big money to clog up their salary cap.

Their fwds played too deep in thr 3rd quarter and did not lead hard enough. It was too far for their mids to kick to. They really missdd McStay mobility and connection marking on the half foreward, he is worth at least 2 goals a game
Re: 2023 AFL Finals Series
Brisbane lose AFEL & NRL GFs by a heart breaking 6 points combined.

Slightly down for a lot of key stats, but shockingly only 2 goals in 24 games. This is a guy who is a good overhead mark and can hit the scoreboard. Or at least, used to hit the scoreboard and make oppo coaches worry about him offensively. I?m kind of taken a bit a back, I know he and them wanted him more midfield. But a guy with goal scoring ability kicking only one goal on average every 12 games is a radical change. Surely he?s worth a burst forward here or there. Not just yesterday. Kind of feels like they?ve got blinkers on.
Richardson coomenting during GF called Dunkley the best player in the comp.

No he said best mark above his head for a midfielder. We know Bont and Danger are two better marks above their heads just off the top of my head.

Yeah but he is good at it and we have to make it clear for our audience who we don't think can comprehend anything but the most simple of concepts so we just say he's the best and leave it at that.
Re: 2023 AFL Finals Series
There has been a lot of talk since Saturday that the Grand Final was one of the best Grand Finals ever. (e.g. Jake Niall in The Age: -https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/was-pies-lions-epic-the-grandest-final-of-the-century-20231001-p5e8wp.html).
I was there and yes, it was enjoyable, yes it was close. But it really didn't have the feel of one of the greats to me. What do other WOOFers think? Had Brisbane kicked an extra goal in that last 90 seconds, then yes, an epic finish for sure.
Then last night I switched on NRL Grand Final. I nearly went to bed after Ezra Mam scored his electrifying three tries and I figured they had started engraving his name on the Clive Churchill Medal, only for us Nathan Cleary to will his way to lead his team to the most unlikely victory. For me, this was the greatest NRL Grand Final I'd seen. Incredible. The AFL by comparison, not so much.

Yeah it was a bit meh.
I mean, it was close so it was more entertaining than the last few, but it didn't feel like a blockbuster.
Might be because nobody cares about Brisbane.

I thought the 2nd qtr was one of the better qtrs of footy I've seen - 6 goals to 5 and some elite passages of play from both teams (McCarthy goal was especially top shelf, and Brisbane looked like winners after he kicked it - also loved the interplay between McCarthy and Cameron for the Cameron goal). The 1st qtr had some great moments (Zac Bailey 2nd goal was absolute rolled gold, and his 1st wasn't half bad either). The 2nd half was a real dog fight (understandable given what as at stake) but incredibly tense - the last qtr especially still had some memorable moments (De Goey goal, Sidebotton 55m goal, the Cameron goal to hit the front had an awesome build-up, as did the Daniher goal with McCluggage's work near the boundary)
All in all, it was one of the better games/finals in recent history.

I thought WC played better to win from coming from behind with 90 sec to go in 2018 GF.
I thought the pies had it in the bag then. I was hoping Lions would do so, but that crap advantage rule ruined it.
Media make what of it to sell more media coverage .
Nonetheless, it was a good game to watch , very entertaining for an afternoon, lots of highlights, other than Dunkley being included in any.
