2011 - NAB Rising Star
As in previous years I'll update this each week.
To be eligible to be nominated for the award, a player must be younger than 21 years of age on January 1 of the award year and have played 10 or fewer senior games before the beginning of the season. A player who is suspended during the season is not eligible to win the award, however is still eligible for nomination.
The NAB Rising Star for round 1 is Essendon's Dyson Heppell.

Re: 2011 - NAB Rising Star
Tapscott very, very stiff, thought Heppel was just the beneficiary of a dominant team performance.

Re: 2011 - NAB Rising Star
How many GC in the next 22 rounds ?

Agree with that, I think Libba showed more on the day, but my pick for the round would have been Tapscott or Shaun McKernan.

Re: 2011 - NAB Rising Star
Luke Shuey is the Nab Rising Star for round 2
Libba Snubbed!

Well deserved gong for Shuey, he was extremely important in a hard fought win.
Libba's time will come if his form continues as it is.
Good call.

Exactly, as good as Libba was (and I didn't see the WC game) 27 touches and 3 goals is hard to argue with.
Libba will be nominated soon enough.
So will Wallis.
And Tapscott.
And Firstdogonthemoon.

Re: 2011 - NAB Rising Star
I'm the over weekly the rising star award, and not because Libba didn't get it this week. Based on a weekly opinion against players in different games and doen't really mean much except for end of year chance of 24 in the final prize.
-
Re: 2011 - NAB Rising Star
Isn't Shuey in his third year on the list?
-
Re: 2011 - NAB Rising Star
I'm a little disappointed but it's hard to argue against it.
Personally I rate 9 tackles higher than 3 goals. Libba will get his nomination soon enough so it doesn't really matter when they are nominated.

Do you really rate 9 tackles above 3 goals?!
Boyd had 11 tackles last week - most of which because he was second to the ball - I'd have preferred for him to have gotten on the scoreboard a couple of times!
-
Re: 2011 - NAB Rising Star
A bit late, but the winner this week was a worthy winner; West Coast's Luke Shuey.

It's the backman coming out in me. :D
I see goals the end result of hard work elsewhere.
I watched Libba very closely Sunday and his 9 tackles were not because he was second to the ball. I'm really not sure how Shuey got his goals, I didn't see their game. If he got them because of his own hard work then I'd gladly take the comment back.

It all depends how these stats came about?
If they are 3 freebie goals up against 9 chase down someone elses opponent then tackles would win hands down. If the tackles where a result of your opponent beating you to the ball and the goals were crucial hard fought team lifters then goals would obviously win.

It's about age. Something like being under 21 as of the start of the season, or as of the start of the year.
From memory, Shuey was a bottom-age draftee.

Jarrad Grant was in his 3rd year as well last year when he was nominated, but he met the qualification criteria that you have outlined.

He did.

Re: 2011 - NAB Rising Star
How did Libba not win this week?
I am biased and didnt watch any other game and have never seen Shuey... Outraged nonetheless!
-
Re: 2011 - NAB Rising Star
Shuey was very impressive against Port. Moves very well and has a bit of toe, looks like he might be the pick of WC's young midfielders from the past few drafts.

Re: 2011 - NAB Rising Star
Geelong's Mitch Duncan is the round 3 NAB Rising Star winner.

How do you put abet on this ?
Sports bet or the TAB do not have an option on the screen.

Re: 2011 - NAB Rising Star
Port Adelaide's Jasper Pittard is the round 4 NAB Rising Star nominee.

Re: 2011 - NAB Rising Star
I didn't watch much of the Port game but from what I did see, Pittard looked very composed down back, like a less creative Bob Murphy.
Hopefully the kid we picked one before him kicks on soon.

Re: 2011 - NAB Rising Star
Really not getting the nominees this year; no way Darling doesn't get the nod this week.

If he misses out it will be under the 'Players involved in bar fights' clause.

He won't be getting it this week (i.e rd 5) as the WCE have the bye. Hopefully little Libba puts on a show out West.

Sportsbet.com.au has odds up for this.
Heppell currently favourite at 5-1.
Young Libba 4th favourite at 11-1.
I know one astute judge who got Libba pre-season at $67.00 :)

I'm with you there mate. I haven't had a real issue with the nominations so far but those in charge seem to really rate accruing disposals. Having a large DT score seems to put you right up there, seems like another award suited to midfielders/smalls which is especially unfair due to talls/KPs/rucks typically taking longer to develop.
My four nominations would be Heppell, Shuey, Zac Smith and Darling.

Huge game today by Brandon Matera, will take some beating this week.

Totally agree, thought he was impressive against us also. Looks like a very very good player.

Exactly the type of player we need in our forward line :(

His 2 biggest challengers may come from team mates Charlie Dixon and David Swallow.
-
Re: 2011 - NAB Rising Star
Libba or Wally will have to rack up 20-30 touches and kick 5 goals to get a look in this week, Brandon Matera looked very good.

Re: 2011 - NAB Rising Star
Hardly any surprise after his outstanding effort for the Gold Coast on Saturday that Brandon Matera is the round 5 NAB Rising Star nominee.

Yet the Sunday Age journalist couldn't find a spot for him in the top 5 players on the ground.

Not denying Matera's super performance on Saturday, but I was very impressed with Menzel yesterday, and against much better opposition. Had he started the game and not come on as a sub, he might have given the nomination a shake this week.
