Who will coach the Saints?
I'm sure everyone is as upset as me over the Saints losing their coach ;) , just at the time 4 other clubs (including Freo) have appointed new coaches.
Three of the leading candidate assistant coaches are now taken, leaving Cameron, Burns and retread coaches like Laidley, Eade and Craig, and possibly Williams from GWS.
Who will end up coaching the Saints? Has Lyon's late move really left them in the lurch?
-
Re: Who will coach the Saints?
Eade.
I'm determined to get one coaching pick right!
-
Re: Who will coach the Saints?
I can't see Eade getting the St Kilda job. It was widely known St kilda considered the Bulldogs to be mentally weak the past few years, i cant see them appointing the coach that was in charge during that time.

You're probably right. Funny enough, I thought Eade might get the Demons gig - he would have been good for them IMO.
Should they go for experience (seems out of favour now) or take on of the recently unsuccessful candidates?

Re: Who will coach the Saints?
I hope it's Scott Watters just to make Buckley's job a little harder.
As with us the St.Kilda job is a tough one due to the state of their list.

This. In fact anyone left at Collingwood, the boot studder, the orange lady. Anyone to make the puppet strings a little harder to be pulled for Bucks :)

Our list is in a better state than St Kilda's but I do get your point.
Pumping games into Tutt, Schofield, Jones, Roughead, Dahlhaus will ensure we do not bottom right.
I have a feeling B Mac will love Dahlhaus's ability to tackle and never give up. ;)

Re: Who will coach the Saints?
Burns has pulled out of the Saints job, he is staying at West Coast.

I'd add to that the off-filed dramas make them far less attractive than the Bulldogs
-
Re: Who will coach the Saints?
Given that 4 other clubs have selected their new coaches the Saints can take their time and interview all the best and brightest assistants
Pelchen can handle the list management stuff. As much as none of us would like Pelchen he does seem to know what he is doing with a list.

Pretty sure St.Kilda supporters could real off some 'no name' players too...

Re: Who will coach the Saints?
I like guys that have coached a team in their own right even at lower levels as they are more rounded.
I hope Robert Harvey gets the gig though as it would be an absolute shambles. They may get someone like Harvey and put an Eade type as manager or something though.....

Gut feel is they will pick Harvey.

Re: Who will coach the Saints?
R Harvey would have get a mentor alongside him like Hird/Thompson.

At about 1am on Sunday morning Molly Meldrum was beign interviewed on RRR.
He may have been a bit drunk (sounded it) - basically said he wanted Danny Frawley as a coach with Max Hudgeton as an assitant. Also wanted Lyon to take Zac Dawson with him to Freo.
Asked what he thought of Lyon, Molly said that if his house was on fire and Ross Lyon woke him up, he'd stay in bed :D

Molly often gets interviewed after a few too many Scotches. I heard him last year after the finals being interviewed by Finey, babbling crap about the Saints and Storm.

Always good for a chuckle, even if his rantings are a bit BF-esque.
His Zac Dawson rant was great :D

I heard him on RRR's party show after our infamous game against them last year!
Was scathing on Lyon ( pretty pissed ) .
Back to the topic Peter Rohde for mine.

My family lives over in the west. Harvey has quite a lot of interest in the mining sector.
Big house, kids in school, and plenty of well heeled friends. More unlikely than likely to head back to Melbourne I am told.

Are we talking about R Harvey or M Harvey here?

Scott Watters is apparently in contention. You would have to think this is Rocket's last roll of the dice however in getting another senior job. It does appear to be the era of the untried coaches apart from Ross Lyon given the announcements in the past week. Hard to see Robert Harvey getting the nod and you would think that Mark Harvey would be headed to Essendon or GWS given the strong Bombers influence in these two clubs, as an assistant coach.

Re: Who will coach the Saints?
Whoever it is, they've enlisted Brad Johnson's opinion as part of their 'process'...
Saints appoint senior coach selection panel
"The selection panel will be assisted by a specialist advisory group consisting of:
- Former AFL player, Brad Johnson will advise on football matters"

Re: Who will coach the Saints?
My short list for the St Kilda job....
Jason Akermanis
Malcolm Blight (again)
Peter Rohde
-
Re: Who will coach the Saints?
Brad Johnson to be part of the selection panel
Does this mean they want to have a good look at Eade and Cameron?

How could you leave out Ken Judge?

Re: Who will coach the Saints?
I find Brad being involved a bit strange, he wasnt in a flag winning team and comes from a club that has struggled in every way during his career.
Saints are very much the equivalent of us they might as well of grabbed someone else inside their own club.
Brads a great bloke but I dont know if he brings anything to the table on picking a coach.
Then again he could be working undercover and trying to recommend the biggest dud :)

Richard Hadlee won a flag in his 4th game - I'd take Brad's knowledge over Hadlee's, thanks*
* Brad may just be there to weed out any potential "Rhodes" ;)

Played in 5 preliminary finals under what 5 coaches, played 350+ AFL games, was a highly respected captain and leader.
Why is winning a flag the be all and end all of knowing something about, or having something to offer when selecting a coach?

Not just the finals I mentioned club similarity too, where did I say be all and end all combine them all. Read my total post dont just pick out one sentence.
Nathan Burke is very much the same as Johnson and he has been chosen, 2 of the same.
I am happy he has that job but its certainly left field, seems right has been given up to left this year in many ways in the AFL coaching system.

You wrote that you weren't sure Johnson brought anything to the table when choosing a coach, which is a fair enough opinion to add. I didn't agree and as a result posted some reasons why he might.
You also wrote that:

I believe the bulldogs during Brads time were highly successful without tasting the ultimate success, but also had periods of immense struggles.
To me it seemed that a large part of what you were saying was that because Brad hadn't tasted the ultimate success then he didn't have much to offer, but i do acknowledge you mentioned the similarities between the two clubs recent performance.
If what you wanted to say was what you've said in your second post that Johnson and Burke appear to be from too similar backgrounds then thats a fine and reasonable opinion to express.

Re: Who will coach the Saints?
The rate him high and that's all that matters for them.

Re: Who will coach the Saints?
Saints sound out Eade for top job
Link

Re: Who will coach the Saints?
Would love to see Eade get a coaching job.
Would not be happy if he improved the Saint's.
