The small snapshot of what Cody Weightman brought to the table in 2020 was enough to get Western Bulldogs supporters excited about the future.
And the 19-year-old has his sights set on trying to break into the AFL team on a more permanent basis next year.
Weightman joined the Bulldogs with pick 15 in the 2019 NAB AFL Draft, playing three games in his debut season and kicking an incredible check-side goal with his first touch in senior football.
The motivated teenager has been back at pre-season training for the past two weeks with the Bulldogs’ first-to-fourth year crew, looking for areas to improve his game.
With the likes of Weightman, Aaron Naughton and number one draft pick Jamarra Ugle-Hagan coming through the ranks, the Bulldogs boast some talented, young forward prospects.
“I want to be a small forward, I want to make that my craft and what I do for – hopefully - the next 10-plus years,” Weightman told 3AW Sportsday.
“That’s something I’m working really hard on at the moment. I want to master my craft as a forward and see where that can take me.
“I’ve changed my ways a little bit in recent years, where I used to be very goal-driven and have performance goals and things I’d like to achieve.
“I’ve broken it up more to weekly goals and things I want to achieve weekly to make sure I have a real specific focus on the process, without too much focus on the end goal.
“That’s something that’s already helped me this pre-season compared to last year.”

Hopefully Cody is much more prominent for us next season. Our attack is looking very ominous which will worry opposition defences.

Very ominous on paper only Eastie, on paper only.
Re: Weightman eyes 2021 opportunity
It's rare for a first round pick to be flying under the radar. I've heard nothing about him for months and nobody has him in their round 1 2021 team.
Re: Weightman eyes 2021 opportunity
By all means line up 'round the corner to kick me for this in a year or two but I just don't see 'it' with Weightman and fear we flubbed this selection badly because we chose for (an admittedly pressing) need.
Prove me wrong kid, prove me wrong.

The covid year and lack of VFL are common to all last years draftees. Will be telling how they are managed.

Gotta agree. Really feel like we were all in on Kozzie Pickett and once we learned that wasn't an option we thought in a straight line.
Re: Weightman eyes 2021 opportunity
Got my fingers crossed for this lad. We probably need a dynamic forward with a bit more mongrel more than his zippy, sheep dog sort of play but both attributes are required, so there is a real opportunity for him to sniff a few goals and get his hands on the ball inside 50.
Re: Weightman eyes 2021 opportunity
Whether he should have been picked as a first rounder or not is irrelevant now, he was picked and in our system and it's up to us to develop his clear talent.
I get that he isn't the forward we all desperately wanted at that pick, but good specialist forwards are hard to come by and always come in handy.
Looking forward to seeing how he develops with actual lower level footy played.

Agree entirely. He has only been with us a very short time. Covid year was a disaster. Showed enough in a short time a little bit of the x factor. I like him.
Re: Weightman eyes 2021 opportunity
Looks like Cody kinda knew what he was aiming for this year.
Re: Weightman eyes 2021 opportunity
Really like how Cody has gone about it this season. Very exciting in that forward line.
