Haven’t we come a long way…until 2016 we’d never won interstate (in fact I’d dread to think of what our average losing margin was). We reliably stunk it up.
Including tonight we have only ever won 21 finals. Therefore in the Bevo era we have won 33% of all Bulldogs finals. In the last six seasons we have won 33% of all the finals in the VFL/AFL era. Incredible.
So Bevo has coached for six seasons. He has coached ~6% of our years in the competition. He has won ~33% of our finals.
I was 10 when we won our first final in my lifetime. That was 1985. Prior to that we had only ever won 6 finals. So I have witnessed in person or on TV ~71% of all Bulldog final wins. It has been a good era to be a Bulldog supporter. Growing up seeing Carlton and Essendon dominate I was so envious. How the tables have turned.
Including the GF, Bevo would have coached the Bulldogs in 11 finals. The GF will be the clubs 55th Final. So Bevo has coached 20% of all Bulldogs finals.
You want to hear something really depressing. Since 1987 the West Coast Eagles have played in 55 finals.
When we won in 85, we hadn’t won a final since ‘61.
It feels like we are in a golden era, with the best player in the competition, a brilliant (gloriously eccentric) coach, and a couple of young bucks in Naughton and Bailey Smith not even in their prime.
The coach isn't that eccentric, he clearly has a plan and it's being executed in front of our eyes. Just concentrate on what he says, when he says it.
The Bevo Myth takes away too much from the methodical and calculated approach and execution he and his coaching team, plus the players take into these games.
He is a legend. He's seven and three, and will be eight and three in two weeks.
