Doggies battling to get Aka back on the leash
Caroline Wilson - The Age - 26 May
SHORTLY after he was confronted two days ago by his captain Brad Johnson and the Western Bulldogs leadership group, Jason Akermanis had a second meeting and a second confrontation with the formidable Bulldogs quartet of David Smorgon, Rodney Eade, Campbell Rose and James Fantasia.
The key men who run that football club delivered a similar message to that brought home by the senior players. Akermanis was at Whitten Oval, they told him, to help the club win games of football - not to make off-field headlines and by extension create massive headaches for everyone else.
Akermanis seemed chastened and not a little shell-shocked from the events of the previous four days, which reached their zenith, for him, when he realised his house was being attacked by young men throwing eggs on Saturday night as an apparent angry response to his ''Stay in the closet'' newspaper column aimed at homosexuals playing AFL football.

Why didn't I have to even look to know who wrote this article?

She's continuing her love affair with Aker.

Re: Doggies battling to get Aka back on the leash
Are people disagreeing with the article or who wrote it?
It would seem that Akermanis now makes more money in the media than on the field.
At least 3 times a year he brings pressure and negative press about our Football Club.
Rightly or wrongly people who dont have an interest in football see Akermanis as "our" spokes person and would think his opinions are the clubs opinions.
Now he is struggling on the field more than ever before.
Interesting times for Akermanis; especially if he does spend sometime in the VFL.

Good thoughtful post Bob.
I too am a bit concerned about Aker at the moment. His form is down and he has brought some unwanted attention & controversy along for the ride.
History says Aker quickly addresses this and lets his footy do the talking for a bit.
Let's hope so.

^^ That's crap, and Caro's insinuation is malicious -- don't be naive about her clear vendetta against the Dogs. Is it also coincidence that she somehow managed to get 'Doggies' and 'battling' into the same sentence?
As I posted on a different thread:
What kind of rubbish is being insinuated by the fact that Aker is getting paid more outside the club? What does that have ANYTHING at all to do with his on-field performance? Not everyone is led by their hip pocket. He said last year that it would be his last because of how tough pre-seasons are, but it was his choice to come back after the club asked him to, on much lower money, and endure another pre-season ONLY because he feels that we are a genuine chance for the flag.
Are we suggesting that he's going to throw all that away -- ie. his last ever AFL season, a chance at a flag, and all the hard work put in over the off-season because he's got an eye on his media gigs? Ridiculous.

Agree with this 100%, mate.
Re: Doggies battling to get Aka back on the leash
It's silly to put forward that Aker is a "spokesperson" for the club. The article is typical of the journo a few cheap shots some guess work and a few fairytales. Stock Standard Caro:rolleyes:

Well said.

Caroline Wilson writing a column about off field politics- There's your shock headline.
She is nothing more than football's equivalent of a Woman's day journalist.

Well said Lantern, I totally agree with you. What really gets up my nose is the headline - very rarely do the media call us"doggies", and it's been a long time since we have been labelled "battlers". What a bl***dy joke!

In fairness to Caro, headlines are written by sub-editors, so that at least isn't her fault.
