In the old days, to stop momentum, you start a big fight. These days, I think one way is to slow the game down. Of course you need to gain possession and try not to give up the ball.

I think it's certainly helped with the closeness of scores this year. Very hard to flood back like teams have done in the past to protect a lead

Yes we have, however, I was more talking about the AFL has a whole and momentum in general to try and answer the OP.
