Club Statement on Coaching Staff changes

The Western Bulldogs today confirmed Assistant Coach’s Paul Williams and Peter Dean will not be continuing with the Club in 2012.

Williams has accepted an offer to join Carlton as an Assistant Coach after three seasons at Whitten Oval.

Williams joined the Melbourne Football Club as Midfield Coach in 2007 following his 306 game career and after two seasons joined the Bulldogs as Forward Coach.

Dean came to the Bulldogs in 2008 after spending time as Assistant Coach at the Northern Bullants (VFL) and Head Coach at the Murray Bushrangers in the TAC Cup.

The Western Bulldogs would like to thank Williams and Dean for their contribution to the Club and wish them all the best in their future endeavours.

The Club is in discussions with a number of exceptional Assistant Coach candidates — announcements will be made in due course.

What, are thinking of drafting him G-Mo?

Maybe we could pick up a better assistant coach as a replacement?

Perhaps he has developed a raport with Monty and wants to keep someone with some previous knowledge of players, but at the same time someone who will work with him and isn't or hasn't been a threat for his position.

Williams had been there 3 years and applied for the top job so he was naturally going to leave anyway. Peter Dean also had done his time and probably was best for him to move on. Makes sense for Monty to stay.

I think Monty and Macca will get on well, both seem honest and hard and both apparently get on well with young ones

The Western Bulldogs today announced the appointment of Shannon Grant to the Club’s coaching panel for season 2012.

Grant comes to the Club after a successful two-year period with the Essendon Football Club where he filled the roles of Bendigo Bombers Senior Coach and Development Coach.

The 34 year old guided the Essendon’s VFL affiliate to successive finals series in 2010 and 2011 after inheriting a side that failed to register a win in the 2009 season.

Grant also worked closely with Essendon’s younger players as Development Coach.

Grant forged a tremendous playing career which included a Premiership, Norm Smith medal, All-Australian selection and Club Best and Fairest in 301 AFL games with Sydney and North Melbourne.

Bulldogs Senior Coach Brendan McCartney said Grant comes to the Club with impressive credentials.

“Shannon has worked extensively at VFL level and has shown that not only is he a good coach but he has also been able to successfully develop young players,” he said.

“We’re thrilled to have him part of the Bulldogs family and look forward to him developing into a really good AFL Coach.”

I think Essendon were looking at 'elevating' Shannon into their coaching ranks, if I am not mistaken.

It was announced yesterday they'd he'd coach Bendigo again, well here it was, the Bendigo news is a fair way behind on the news.

Hopefully not the role where he gets arrested on the steps of the local pub at 3am for public intoxication.

It's interesting that Essendon lost McCartney to us and Wallis is suspended and yet didn't promote Grant. Perhaps they have kept a spot for Harvey.

A tough assessment there CG. You can't be too against the drink given the moniker you use

Lets judge Grant on his coaching credentials not his past stuff ups.
