Re: 2014 Rising Star Nominations

This is an example of why betting is a game for mugs.

Not sure how much influence King would have but his opinion does seem to hold some regard in the media.
One would think if you are involved in any portion of the game, from boot strapper, player or commentator you shouldn't be allowed to bet on the AFL.
If the Rising Star was based on some form of measurement instead of the opinion of a few blokes this kind of shit would be far harder to pull off. I think the award should consist of a number of different rating systems combined. Something like: 5-4-3-2-1 votes from AFL-appointed panel = 30% weighting; 3-2-1 votes from opposition coaches that day = 40% weighting; actual statistics from the day = 30% weighting. This dictates the round's nomination and removes the power to dictate a preconceived result from any one group. Then, you have the players as a group vote on the award in a 3-2-1 manner, with the proviso they're not allowed to vote a player on the same team.
It would go some way to resolve the current farcical situation where the AFLPA award it by 300 votes clear to Bonti, yet he loses the Rising Star by a single vote with rumours of a fix. The AFLPA award seems to hold much more respect in fan minds, if not the media's.
