Adelaide hunts for experienced assistant for coach Brenton Sanderson

Admitting he needs help, Adelaide coach Brenton Sanderson wants a senior AFL coaching figure to assist him, saying a nationwide search has already started. One candidate could be Mark Thompson, who will coach Essendon in the finals but James Hird will resume the Bombers' head coaching role next year.
Asked directly on Friday about luring Thompson to Adelaide, Sanderson said: "We will talk to everyone.
"We probably won't comment on individuals at the moment but that might be a discussion that we will have when our season is done."
Former head coaches John Worsfold and Mark Harvey also loom as candidates to help Sanderson, whose coaching mentor Dean Bailey died from cancer a week before this season started.

We have debated this many times on WOOF whether Macca needs similar help. With the last game about to be played for another season without finals, have woofers changed their mind?

    I haven't.

To me the resources would be better spent in developing our list via specialist assistants more so than worrying about match day tactics for at least another season.

The evidence against Macca's match day nous is sketchy at best.

I don't quite get why coaches need someone from outside of their coaching team to assist. We already have a GM of football who should be handling a lot of the administrative tasks.
What exactly do the coaches need assistance with that their coaching team cannot handle?

I guess an experienced head in the coaching team as opposed to an inexperienced coach. Someone they can bounce things off at their own level rather than a junior coach.

I can see that might be of help but Sanderson states he is a better coach now than what he was when he was appointed so it appears the Crows are 3 years late in giving him the right structure.

Could we get Thompson for a couple of years? He still lives in Geelong doesn't he? A trip to the Whitten Oval wouldn't be a bad one for him.

Sanderson has had a few people down there like Dean Baily.

Yeah Bomber would be good, but a long shot.

For us, we just need to review who we have now and whether they are the right people.

I'd like to see recruiting and development levels increased than an assistant coach from outside.
By all means review the current set up, but recruiting and development are the main aim for me.
Twelve months ago I thought differently, but I think it's a playing list issue and not a tactical one.

I completely disagree to be honest, I think recruitment and development have been two of our really strong points over the last 3 seasons. We've got some very good kids in, all have improved markedly across this time period and really started to shoulder the load this year. I completely agree with some of the analysis done in other threads that while our ladder result is similar to last year we haven't relied on Griff or Minson (and it will probably show having no one in real AA contention).

I like the idea of an outside assistant, ideally from an experienced club, purely because they bring in a whole new bank of knowledge. Even someone like Bolton from Hawthorn would be terrific, it's just a whole new set of eyes.

Take your point, but we still have part time assistants.
Recruiting and development are the biggest issues for all clubs now, but in saying that I'm hoping we review our coaches.
If the club feels a change or fresh ideas are needed, then by all means.
We're all looking in from the outside in regards to assistants, and therefore makes it hard to judge.
