Yeah, you might be right. I've just read some articles about him. He was only 16 when we drafted him and the 4 year hold that gave us expired on 1990. Although he does say if the Crowd hadn't started up he would have come to Victoria to play on 1991. He played in 4 SANFL premierships either side of his time with the Crows.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

The word was that he was coming if the Crows didn't start that year.

I seem to remember that too but reading up about him now he seems to be denying that.

Like I said I had kept a special eye on his form for some reason in 90.

He was the first player to sign a contract with the Crows and the first player to get a kick in a match with them too.

Over the years we did have a few problems bringing players over from SA.
Phillipou stayed an extra year or two, Marker, Naley and Pitt also spring to mind.

Yeah there have been a few. Neil Craig and Trevor Clisby were both drafted by us in 1981 as well but never even looked like playing for us. Jon Riley played one game and drive back to Adelaide in the car we'd given him as a sign on bonus.

On the other hand in those early drafts Geelong picked Tony McGuiness in 1981 and Brad Hardie in 1982 while North drafted Richard Cousins who was a handy player for us.

Which Marker? Peter Marker? He was an absolute gun back in the day for Glenelg

I have a memory that we got $60k in compensation but nothing in terms of draft or recruitment terms. He really would have helped us in those finals in the early 90s.

That's an uncanny recollection Twodogs, thanks for sharing. I don't know anyone else that comes closes to your footy memory.
How good was that John Riley?

peter marker was an absolute star in the Sanfl. Riley was a pretty good defender for north Adelaide, and also a rocket scientist. Both won premierships at their respective clubs

Yeah I can be a bit of a savant when it comes to sport stats. For some reason I can remember every Australian cricket captain's middle name too. I don't know why. I've never sat down and decided to commit this stuff to memory, it just sort of sticks there. I bought Mark Pennings' 5 set book series about early Victorian football* from eBay a while ago so a lot of that has gone into the belfry now

As for Riley, from the one game sample I thought that he was a little slow for League footy and that may have been why he went back to SANFL footy maybe? It was just a bit odd that he'd make the commitment but go back after just one game.

*Well worth the money if you're interested in football history. Pennings' research is outstanding and as well as scores and match info there are a lot of anecdotes. I think that Raw Toast for one would really enjoy them.
