    Club Stereotypes

Carlton fans: For some reason a lot of Jewish people seem to be Carlton fans. I had an ex dentist of mine, and a whole other bunch of friends in Malvern East that were. Also used to do some work in nursing homes and all the old Jewish folk were Blues fans. To a supporter, all hated Mick Malthouse. Have to be the first club to pull the trigger on the bronx Cheer I'd say. When they become annoying just start talking about John Elliot and they shut up.

Melbourne: Tend to be ex-private school folk. Did a lot of work with Haileybury and they are all Melbourne people. Not very savage at their own club's wet-lettuce philosophy of footy - sort of resigned and ho-hum. When you start discussing footy, they sort of shuffle around a bit and make funny faces. Find it awkward to discuss football. Few old farmers down Hamilton way are Melbourne supporters too. Must have the patience of saints.

St Kilda: See themselves as being slightly trendy and hip. 'Sainters' - irks me when they say that. Shout a lot of silly things at games. Seem to have a higher proportion of women. A lot of librarians seem to be Saints fans.

North Fans: probably most akin to us. Have spent a fair bit of time at the North Members end and get along alright with their fans. Shout 'Go Boom-Boom' a lot. Obviously highly grating on the nerves.

Geelong fans: Arrogance level is high but they all warm to us and often will claim us as their 'second team'. So, can't wait until we are going down there to pummel them and their sense of entitlement on a regular basis. Don't care about anything but beating Hawthorn. Sort of expect success and very high expectations as fans. Get really pissed off when beaten by us or Melbourne. Tend to live in the past a fair bit.

Richmond: Hilarious at games. Totally blinded by the yellow and black when analysing their own list. Seem to have a higher proportion of bearded supporters. Definitely seem to buy more AFL merchandise than other supporters. Always seeing Tigers bumper stickers and such.

Essendon: Fanatics are always concealing a secret doubt.

    Any other comments?

    Re: Club Archetypes

A few regional dialect variations and other linguistic phenomena I have noticed:

Richmond supporters: pronounce the phoneme "ow" as "a" hence, "yellow" as "yella"

Essendon supporters: pronounce the phoneme "en" as "er", hence their team name is pronounced as Esserdon.

Melbourne: pronounce the word "demons" with a silent "mon." This indicates that they would pronounce the name "Simon", e.g., as "Si", etc. They also practice honing their accent with the following phrase: "To the snow we go when our ladder position is low."

Collingwood: every second word is a swear word.

Jews and Italians early immigrants settled in Carlton
This is why there are a lot of Jewish Carlton supporters

Not to mention the odd Italian Carlton supporter.

For some reason Essendon supporters have a fixation on rocking up to international (mainly colonial) sporting events in the Essendon jumper.

    It's weird.

And suburban BBQ's. Makes it a bit awkward because recently you spend the whole lunch trying NOT to talk about Essendon. So as not to offend them.

Its not offending them that keeps me from saying anything, it more once you mention Essendon they tend to start with a tirade of how wonderful Hird is,they are innocent, have done nothing wrong and that AFL are just out to crucify them.
Like they would know what its like for the AFL to try and crucify them.

Think you'll find that Richmond has a higher proportion of Greek supporters (relative to total supporters) than any other club - a by-product of the actual suburb being full of Greeks in the 60's and 70's.

Collingwood has its fair share, as does Carlton. Not so many in the Dogs

    Re: Club Archetypes

This thread title is a misnomer, it should be 'Club Stereotypes'. 'Archetypes' are innate types, such as are evident in Greek myths, folk stories and World Championship wrestling.
Collingwood- a lot of Irish Catholics in its early years, because they were the poor working class of the time.
Carlton- a lot of bluebloods, moneyed people, including Bob Menzies. Later a lot of Italian and Greek working class migrants who had taken over from the Irish.
Melbourne- your conservative, old public school boys and MCC members.
Richmond- is it just me or is every second woman you meet a Richmond supporter? Must be the Tiger emblem that allures them.
    Footscray Football Republic.

Was it a Hawks fan who yelled out " Shut up, or I'll put up your rent!".
    Sort of sums them up.

I've noticed a lot of hipster type Dogs fans at games, with boofy hair and skinny jeans. Are we becoming trendy??
