Dogs take on the Great Ocean Road


VETERAN Bulldog Matthew Boyd has shown there is still some life in his ageing legs, taking out the club's 9km individual cycling time trial just outside of Lorne on Monday morning.

Boyd, 33, won the event ahead of younger teammates Mitch Wallis, 23, and Koby Stevens, 24, which saw the players cycle up Skenes Creek Road from the Great Ocean Road into the Great Otway National Park on Victoria's surf coast.

The average gradient of the journey was five per cent with a total elevation gain of 489m.

The time trial followed an early morning group ride from Wye River to Skenes Creek, with the players joined by professional cyclist Simon Clarke.

Defender Dale Morris said the ride taught him and his teammates plenty about teamwork – a principle he hopes they can transfer to the AFL arena.

"It was a great thing to do and I was actually surprised how much teamwork we needed in the peloton and how you can really leverage off each other and make the ride easier," Morris said.

"You can't leave it up to one person to drag the whole team through. Everyone had their moments to lead the team and you can definitely take plenty out of that."

Never realised that Lachie Hunter is a bit of a pinhead. His helmet looks like a mushroom and his head appears to be similar dimensions to The Specimen's biceps.

I did that ride (Along the Great Ocean Road to Skeene's Creek and then the climb) as part of the Amy Gillette ride a few years back.. Beautiful countryside and the views from the top of the climb are great.. I'm sure the lungs would have been empty afterwards.

You'd think that would stop him from cracking jokes wouldn't you? But it doesn't. Like for for example, while I was riding, I nearly rode in to a street sign because I was looking at nice ocean in the distance, and Bevo was like "I bet you didn't sea that coming, did you?"
