The list tells me that this year we should turnover the list harder this year, because if we can re-sign the 2020 names you point out, next year looks like a minimal change year. I can see 8 or 9 changes (inc. the two retirements already) without being too radical about it. Some trades, free agents, half way decent picks, father/sons, academy options and rookie upgrades should allow us not to have too many late picks.

I'm hoping for a Bailey Smith extension soon.

Yep. There's a good size that can/should go this year. I've only being thinking today whether we are getting $350,000+ value out of Suckling next year based on this year's output. If not, or with some injuries he pursues the NFL thing, that extra salary cap could super-size the already huge war chest in salary cap we have this trade period. Alternatively, if we are happy and Suckers is happy, he plays on for I imagine another year.

We also need to bear in mind that Gardner cancels out one of the outgoing list spots if he stays as he is effectively an extra at the moment.

If he's a rookie, I'm assuming we could simply delist a rookie and break even if we want to retain RG. Or elevate La Young, open up a rookie spot that way and if we want to retain RG use that spot and still have just the 4 rookies.

Yes but he's still taking up a spot if he stays. I'm just talking overall list numbers. We effectively have a list of 45 at the moment and it will need to be reduced to 44 (ignoring any potential category B/international rookies).

There are a number of different ways we can use the rookie list.

What will be interesting is if Naughton, Schache, Trengove & English all stay fit and Gardner doesn't play again this year at AFEL level... Have we picked him for long term so he gets a rookie spot regardless, or was this a job interview and he doesn't get the chance to claim a spot. Is his 2020 season as an AFEL player all but guaranteed?

If so, then it must surely be a rookie. Sweet looks to have done enough to stay on. La Young has an extension and Buku will stay. So that tells me there's a very high chance La Young will get promoted, or déjÃ* vu all over again and maybe even Roarke gets a one year elevation contract. If we cut up to 9, assuming we can land 3-4 trades of players in, maybe Kellett very late as a FS, that's 4-5 spots open at the draft. One or two rookie elevations might make that easier if the picks are very late. So Gardner is then retained and potentially one live rookie draft pick at 6 (please no delisted players Sam P) or an SSP vacancy.

Thinking now more about the rookie list, I'd think all 5 will be at the club next year.

Dale will get one more crack at it to prove his worth.
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.

all Morris has to prove is whether his body can stand up to another season

Exactly why I asked which Dale .
Morris has to have a good injury free rest of the year.
Bailey is so far above VFL level but needs a few games at AFL Level in a row to show he can do it, sadly he has got injured whenever he has started to show something.

Any word on bailey williams contract?

Disappointing start to year - I’m thinking there’s something behind the scenes Bevo doesn’t like - but hitting his straps now and is responding to the coach.

Would love him to stay. Know the crowd enquires a year or two ago.
