    Re: Father/Son Watch 2017

A month behind, notes from afldrftcentrl.com.au on Buku & Rhylee:

    Round 16

38 Buku Khamis – Khamis is a late-comer to footy, but he looked like a natural out there today. Took some impressive grabs in defence, intercepting a lot of the long balls that went in and then setting up his side on the rebound. Uses the ball well by foot and is a promising, versatile talent for 2018’s draft.

20 Rhylee West – Found the ball easily through the midfield and was able to get the ball moving forward. Has a strong build below his waist and is able to stay standing when he is tackles.

    Round 17

#38 Buku Khamis – Played as a key defender and showed some smarts when teammates had the ball inside defensive 50, where he was often able to spread and get to the right position for the switch. Took some strong contested grabs and with the ball in hand his decision making was good.

    Round 14

#38 Buku Khamis – His goal late in the first term kept his team trailing close behind a tough Sandringham team. Khamis’ fine tuned contested marking showed spectators how dangerous he is in the air. He wasn’t lost when he was moved to the backline late in the second, dominating the contests there as well. Khamis applied some excellent pressure in the first half of the game, but may need to work a little on reading the ball along the ground.

    Round 13

#38 Buku Khamis – Another Jets’ defender whose game I thought was quite impressive. Did not win much of it, but his role in shutting down the dangerous Tom McCartin could not be understated. He only had seven disposals, but kept McCartin goalless which was no easy feat. Khamis was good one-on-one and had a good game sense. For mine, his timing needs some work because he sometimes jumped too early to spoil.

    Round 10

#38 Buku Khamis – Haven’t seen a lot of Khamis up forward but he bagged two goals on his long left foot from outside 50 which were outstanding. He keeps his feet at the contest and has a very good leap. At times he misjudged the flight of the ball and didn’t take as many marks as he could’ve – but I thought it was one of the better games I’ve seen him play. Not a huge ball winner, but his last quarter was special despite missing an easy shot on goal from 15m out.

    Re: Father/Son Watch 2017

Khamis averages in 16 TAC (rounded): 12 disposals, 4.5 marks, 2.5 tackles, 1 goal
Rhylee West in 5 TAC (rounded): 16 disposals, 4 marks, 4.5 tackles

Write ups on the site say West had a strong school footy year too.

Khamis selected in the under 17's exhibition match this Friday at Punt Road.

No dramas, as best I can work out Khamis rise seems steep:

    - late to footy
    - generates interest at under 16’s
    - gets into TAC squad as an underage player this year
    - trains and performs well over summer
    - falls into our NGA
    - gets into the side and performs well
    - makes the Vic Metro initial squad
    - offer invited to train with WBFC over this summer
    - improves through the season as per the reports above
    - gets selected for the U/17 exhibition game this Friday at Punt Road

I hope his season next year continues at this trajectory. If he does and Rhylee is a gun in the making like his dad, we will have a great draft even if we need to move a player or two on to improve our draft points position. If we’re greedy, maybe we get to use our first before needing to bid.

Do I remember right that we can go into a deficit for the next year if we have to rather than trade players out?

I think so. But unaware of anyone doing it, so I'm sure on the fine print. I'd expect a few trades out as has been normal (Hamling, Hrovat, Stevens, Stringer etc), so if we ended up wanting as many points as we can I'm sure we can find some. Of future trade for a pick in 2018 for a one of our picks in 2019. But then there's possibles in Libba & Kellett in 2019 so our recruiter and list manager will have an interesting time together working through it all.

Libba might have to changes some of his ways if he wants to be a leader to his younger brother, if that happens.

BT, I’m not feeling it for West. Is his outside game improving?
    They come after one,
    They come after all,
    They can't handle all,
    Lets go....

From some school footy reports i was reading online indicate he's doing some good things outside winning hard contests and extracting it. That was the desire of Dalrymple to see.

At the beginning of the year he was listed at 188cm, 81kg. By the time of the draft next year who knows?

JMac said the obvious with the Crozier trade, that is that we want extra draft points next year. Freo's 4th may be around a modest 100 points. I guess we are going after West & Khamis, and that maybe they might cost a bit.

It may be that, while I also see benefit in having them for other negotiations - plenty of clubs are going to value those points in the 3rd and 4th rounds as we move forward so it doesn't impact their earlier draft selections.
