Three Bulldogs named in 22 Under 22 team

Prolific midfielder Josh Dunkley has been named vice-captain of the AFL Players Association’s 22Under22 team, alongside emerging forward Aaron Naughton and ruckman Tim English.

Announced on Thursday night at the AFLPA MVP awards, the Bulldogs trio received their first 22Under22 nods after outstanding seasons.

Averaging 27.8 disposals and 6.2 tackles per game, Josh Dunkley further solidified himself as a dominant member of the Bulldogs’ midfield group in 2019.

Dunkley, who was named deputy of the fantasy side to Brisbane defender Harris Andrews, said he was grateful to be recognised alongside a talented group of young players.

"To be named vice-captain alongside a quality player in Harris Andrews is a massive honour," Dunkley told AFLPlayers.com.au.

"Seeing the talent in this side is a great indication for the future of football and the excitement fans can expect in years to come."

Reaping the benefits of a move to the forward line in his second season at AFL level, Naughton well and truly earned his spot in the side. The 19-year-old led the competition for contested marks (53), averaged 5.9 marks per game and booted 30 goals.

English was also selected in the side after a breakout year as the Dogs’ number one ruckman. He averaged 5.7 contested possessions and 3.4 tackles per game.

Highlighting the best young talent in the league, the AFLPA’s 22under22 concept was first introduced in 2013. To be eligible for selection, players must be aged 22 years and under for the entirety of the season, including the finals series.

Once named in the initial 20-man squad, a fan vote determined the final 22Under22 team.

    Is that true?
NO official AFL awards should be fan voted. Not even mark of the year. That totally sucks.

No Bailey Smith is a stinking outrage.

    And actually watch the games.

I honestly don't know why the AFLPA bothers with this award. I don't think that I have ever heard a player with anything positive to say about the voting process or say "yippee, it's time for us to vote for the AFLPA awards!!!"
