Carlton were however shocking; got a depth ruckman and a cooked small forward. Couldn't get Papley or Martin done
I wonder if Ryder makes them worse by taking ruck minutes away from Marshall. It's quite possible, hence many teams don't play two rucks anymore.

Heath Shaw and Shane Mumford both given 1 year deals with GWS.

Tom Sheridan and Dylan Buckley shown the door, though they've committed to redrafting Buckley.

Shaw I get. Mumford is cooked. Surely with Jacobs' arrival he'll be playing NEAFL most of the year.

I recall something after the GF that said Mumford's games tally activated an extension. Because as you point out, he's cooked now let alone another preseason and season worth of workload.

They cut Zach Spoule a 197cm KPP, with the view to rookie drafting him if he slides to pick 17 in the rookie draft. 197cm, 92kg, 21yo and according to his Giants bio has great marking hands and has top end endurance. If we could turn those attributes into a defender, I'd be happy to take him before they do.

Assuming we have a rookie draft pick, which is uncertain at this point.

Shaw was outstanding this year and was their best player in the GF by the length of the Flemington Straight - would not surprise me in the slightest if he goes beyond 2020 if he can maintain his pace.

Mumford is nothing more than a break glass option next year. Truth be told they'd be better off playing Brent Daniels in the ruck.

And it's something a lot of clubs should consider. Nothing wrong with having a player on the list that might only play 6 to 9 games in the ruck

Mumford baffles me, unless they have just kept him on for the thug factor.
Shaw is a prize tool, but unfortunately he is still playing decent footy.

What's the point of having Mumford out there to accidentally fall on peoples heads when he did SFA in the Grand Final. You'd think he would have snotted someone out there to give the Giants some fight

As much as I dislike Mumford sitting on players and ramming them , GWS have deemed purpose and value in retaining him. If they get 10 games from him where he is seviceable , chop out for Finlayson or Jacob’s cover and to develop the younger ruck, then his done his job. In some shape or form he did help them to get to the final(s)

So off the DFA table already:

    Buzza - Port
    Brand - Sydney
    Gray - Sydney
    Newnes - Carlton

Not me. Who amongst those names is going to contribute in a meaningful way?

Gray and Newnes are just good enough to keep a kid out of the side. Buzza and Brand aren't good enough to get into the side.

When Geelong and Hawthorn are saying you can't play, you probably cant play. They know what they are doing. Gray and Newnes? They are limited players of the type you are always going to be trying to replace...to me the Power and Saints have acknowledged this by moving them along (and Sydney and Carlton have erred in selecting them).
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.
