While it does show athletic prowess, I'm not sure many goals are kicked by running 2km non stop.

I agree. If I haven't heard of a bloke that has been playing for 3 years or whatever for Collingwood then I would suggest that he isn't a very productive player.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Yeah I'm sure that's the only reason TD!

One advantage draftees have in time trials is that they usually weigh 5-10kg less than an experienced AFL player in the same role. So it really shouldn't be that surprising that for many players, their very first time trial will be their best over their whole career.

Surely that’s countered by their muscle development and time in an elite training environment?

Yep, and the fact the kids aren't doing full pre-seasons anyway and training loads for 2nd+ players are higher. Some players take years to build their tank (Gaz Jnr, Griffen, Ward, McLean, plenty don't play midfield early as they need to build their running capacity).

I just saw on westernbulldogs.com that Garcia is a native born New Zealender. I wonder if we've had any other kiwis play for us?

The Richmond game was a classic example of this. When the ball was kicked to our advantage, we (well mostly Naughts) dominated. It makes the life of a forward so much easier. This is not ground breaking news I know, but it's a simple part of the game that, if executed correctly goes a long way towards a positive scoreboard result.

But how many does it create and how many does it save. Especially when the others can't keep up.
