INJURY NEWS: Bulldog Tim English an early test case for tighter concussion protocols. Will miss tomorrow night v NM, after head knock late last week in intra club. Had been a standout in pre-season before setback.

Shame he won't play but let him recover so he's cherry ripe for the rest of the pre-season and R1 more importantly.

The new protocols require a player to pass a concussion test 5 days before the game so for most players, a concussion in one game will likely rule them out the following week.

Back spasms for Bruce may be a concern. They're not something you can play through but it may just be an acute rather than a chronic injury.

We are proceeding with caution and we should have the list to cover some injuries

Western Bulldogs ex-skipper Easton Wood, new recruit Josh Bruce and young ruckman Tim English set to return after pre-season setbacks

Former Western Bulldogs skipper Easton Wood, new recruit Josh Bruce and young ruckman Tim English are all set to return this weekend as they look to prove their fitness ahead of Round 1.
Luke Beveridge’s men will play a 60-minute intra-club on Saturday before playing Port Adelaide in the Marsh Community Series early next month.

All three missed last Friday night’s win over North Melbourne with minor niggles, but are all expected to play some minutes at the Whitten Oval this weekend.

The Bulldogs have taken a cautious approach with Wood after he suffered a hamstring tightness a fortnight ago, but are set to build up his playing time ahead of the season opener against Collingwood on March 20.

Wood, who handed over the captaincy to three-time Sutton Medal winner Marcus Bontempelli in December, has a long issue of hamstring issues, suffering three 10-week plus tears during his 12-year career.

Bruce (back spasms) and English (concussion) missed the game against the Kangaroos due to minor issues last week.

Key forward Bruce, who was trade from St Kilda to the Western Bulldogs in exchange for Picks 32 and 51 last October, underwent an epidural on Monday and missed the Dogs’ community camp in Ballarat.

English was forced to watch Friday night’s game from the stands after suffering a head knock in match simulation, leaving untried ruckman Jordon Sweet to face All-Australian Todd Goldstein.

Both Bruce and English have been two of the Bulldogs prime movers on the track this pre-season, along with Jason Johannisen, Lachie Hunter, Josh Dunkley, Toby McLean and new captain Marcus Bontempelli.

Young key forward Aaron Naughton is facing a race against the clock to be fit for the Bulldogs’ season-opener after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on Saturday.

The 20-year-old pulled up sore last week in the opposite knee to the one he had operated on after last year’s elimination final and was forced to withdrawal from Friday night’s pre-season game.

Naughton is set to begin running next week and is only a 50 per cent chance of being fit in time to face the Magpies on the first Friday night of the season.

The Bulldogs will give the West Australian every chance to prove his fitness, but won’t take any chances if he hasn’t recovered in time.

Inside midfielder Tom Liberatore and small defender Taylor Duryea won’t be available for Round 1, but are both expected to be fit inside the first month of the season.

Liberatore underwent two bouts of knee surgery late last season and has trained away from the main group for most of the pre-season.

The 2014 best and fairest winner has had two knee reconstructions during his career and required surgery to repair damaged cartilage in 2019.

Duryea only started running during the Bulldogs’ pre-season camp in Mooloolaba at the end of January after his first season at the kennels was marred by hip and groin problems.

Good news to be having Wood, English and Bruce back and also hearing that Liberatore and Duryea are somewhat close to the mark

Competition for spots this year should really lift the focus

Duryea was fantastic for us last year. Probably our only real small defender capable of locking down an opponent.

Particularly in the latter part of last season very good.

    Injury update: February 28

Injury news on Ed Richards, Easton Wood, Tim English, Matt Sucking and Josh Bruce.

Utility Ed Richards will continue to be monitored after being concussed in last Friday’s Marsh Community Series match against North Melbourne.

The 20-year-old was injured in the second quarter and is still dealing with the effects of the incident.

“He was sent to hospital for precautionary scans, but those scans came back and have cleared him of any serious structural pathology,” medical services manager, Chris Bell, said.

“He still does have some concussion symptoms that are persisting.

“He’ll work with our doctors over the coming days to determine his return to play plan.”

The Bulldogs will be boosted for their second Marsh Community Series match against Port Adelaide next weekend, with the expected returns of Easton Wood (hamstring), Tim English (concussion) and Matt Suckling (managed).

However, key forward Josh Bruce remains a test for the clash.

“Josh has recently suffered some back spasms, so we’ve had to back off his training loads,” Bell said.

“These back spasms are settling and he’s starting to come back into full training.

“We’re going to make a decision on his return to play after this weekend.”

Seems to be a persistent back injury for Josh Bruce. They will proceed with extreme caution with Richards and I'm sure he is in good hands.

Great to have English, Suckling and Wood coming back

Sucks about Bruce but it gives Lewis Young more opportunity.

That's the beauty of having options on the list. In previous years one or two injuries to KP players tested us and it shouldn't have.
