Blues turn to son of a legend to replace SOS

Blues turn to son of a legend to replace SOS

CARLTON will turn to the son of a club legend to replace Stephen Silvagni as its new head of list management, poaching Western Bulldogs recruiting manager Nick Austin for the role.

AFL.com.au understands Austin, who is the son of 1979 Blues premiership player and 220-game club stalwart Rod Austin, is set to win the chief list management position after two seasons at the Whitten Oval.

Carlton had been on the lookout for a new head of list management after Silvagni departed the club in early December, with Austin's strong talent evaluation skills believed to be among the main reasons for his appointment.

Austin recruited first-round picks Bailey Smith and Cody Weightman during his time as the Western Bulldogs' recruiting manager, while he also spent three seasons working for the club as an opposition analyst across a successful 15-year career in the AFL industry.

His CV also includes three years as an opposition analyst with Port Adelaide, as well as six years with Richmond as its list management and recruiting officer.

The shakeup within Carlton's recruiting department will see Michael Agresta's position focus more on player acquisition, while Paul Brodie will retain his role as national recruiting manager as the club hopes for a new streamlined approach to its list and recruiting strategy.

Austin will win the role after Silvagni left the club at the conclusion of his contract in early December, with the Blues citing "the complexity of having two sons on the playing list" as the central reason for his departure.

Two of Silvagni's children, Jack and Ben, were recruited to the club as father-son selections during his five-year tenure at Ikon Park. Jack has played 60 senior games for Carlton, while Ben is yet to make his AFL debut.

Austin is expected to begin his new role after Carlton's pre-season training camp in Mooloolaba next week.

Very disappointing to lose a second recruiting manager in 2 years.

    Not great.
Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.

So be it. We've taken Power from Carlton and Bains from St Kilda, and Austin from Richmond recently. Win some, lose some. Nailing the replacement is all I really care about.

And this year the draft is all about Jamarra, Raak & MacPherson which will be most of our draft. So this year is more easily covered, and happening now allows a replacement in before the under age seasons start.

One issue is going to be at this late stage everyone will be contracted for the coming season. I guess clubs may allow someone to leave if they are currently in a lesser role to take up a a senior position at a rival.

It begs the question how Austin wasn't contracted for 2020, and if he was why we would let him go?

Yep Sam Power making sure our bids are covered is the important one this year. I'd rather lose Austin now than mid-year.

A lot of contracts are written up so that if they are offered a higher job they can go, also do you want someone who won’t be happy if you don’t let them go ? It could bring in bad decisions.
We also lost garlic late last year ., people move around in the work place for better opportunities, no doubt we will find a good replacement.

I'm going to throw up Emma Quayle for consideration.

Sports Journo, at The Age from 1999 to 2017. Author of many draft related books. She has been interviewing potential draftees for two decades and watching U/18 footy for two decades. Great industry contacts. Emma is now a recruiter at GWS in her 4th season. Hopefully with strong relationships with the 2017, 2018 & 2019 GWS draftees and Zac Williams. The focus of Jamarra, Raak & MacPherson should allow her an (in relative terms) easier year to work into the role. Emma's in the mould of Power & Bains of being a highly educated professional, broad experience in and around the system and at a rung down at another club.

And they helped us in a trade to get Ed Richards & Josh Schache. They gave us the pick for Caleb Daniel for Liam Jones. Off field, we took Sam Power off them who they’d love back. People come and go. We’ve been doing well with Carlton, all the best to Austin.
