Suns dominate 22under22 squad, two clubs completely snubbed

Suns dominate 22under22 squad, two clubs completely snubbed

GOLD Coast's emergence as one of the League's rising forces has been recognised in the AFL Players' Association's 22under22 squad, with a record eight Suns named among the illustrious group.

The club's youngsters make up one-fifth of the 40-man squad, which doesn't even feature last year's No.1 pick Matt Rowell due to an eligibility criterion which mandates that you must play a minimum of eight games to be selected.

Charlie Ballard, Connor Budarick, Jack Lukosius, Jack Bowes, Noah Anderson, Ben Ainsworth, Ben King and Izak Rankine all earned selection in the squad, which recognises the game's best players under the age of 22 years.

Despite blooding a series of youngsters – including nine AFL debutants – throughout a season that has so far yielded only one victory, there are no Adelaide players in the squad. Melbourne is the only other team without a single representative.

Essendon midfielder Andrew McGrath and Carlton defender Jacob Weitering are both gunning for their third selection in the team, which is voted on by fans, with 10 other players named in the squad having also earned prior inclusions.

Western Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli holds the record for most inclusions, having earned his place in the side five times since the inaugural team was first announced back in 2013.

The 40-man squad was selected by the AFLPA's board, with the final team to be decided via a fan vote. The official 22under22 side will be released on September 22.

Why isn't this team named after Marcus Bontempelli?
More of an In Bruges guy?

Media profile counts as well as ability.

Izak Rankine has promised plenty but has he really delivered.

I would consider Vandermeer has having had an exceptional year.

How does Bailey Williams miss out to someone like Will Day?

I really like Will Day, but how has he had a better year than Bailey Williams?

There's an AFL piece identifying Williams as the most improved in the comp.

I think you have to be 22 or under as of grand final day. Bailey turns 23 on 10 October - usually he would be in, but this year he's out.

Some powerful young midfields starting to develop.

Plenty of talent in that side and it doesn't even include Rowell.

Fingers crossed we have the CHF and FF spots locked up next year!

Maybe you have to be under 22 at the end of the calendar year? If not, it's a travesty. He's a jet!

That's a harsh call agree. Can only think it's a positional issue. Melbourne have no representatives, where are they at I just don't know where their improvement comes from.

Look in the OP, he's in the squad (also it's under 23 as of grand final day which why Bailey Williams missed out with a 10 October birthday due to the 24 October grand final this year). Bolton will still be eligible next year.

Yeah I think it's due to him being classified as a mid and only so many mid spots to go around. Given he's played most of his career as a forward I think they could have slotted him in there. Daicos plays on a wing doesn't he?
