I don't know about round 1 but he's a mile ahead of where I expected him. Genuinely gunning for a wing spot although Treloar, Macrae and eventually Hannan will come into the side playing on ball with perhaps some time forward.

I suspect if VDM cops an injury McNeill looms as a good like for like replacement. Wood in an interview yesterday said he might be our quickest player. Actually got to good positions too rather than did a Justin Sherman (ran really fast into the opposition).

Still early but he's given himself a chance, which is really impressive.

Lot to work with based off his game yesterday.

Probably the shining light in a pretty disappointing dress rehearsal yesterday.

It's only early but our 2020 draft pool of Marra, Mcneil, and Bendendo are all showing signs.

Yes - and I might be in the minority, but I think wing in the modern game is it's own specialist position. It's not just a "midfielder sent there" as the requirement to hold position outside the contest and work hard to set up a defensive press to prevent a switch to the open side of the ground is vital.

We have one AFL standard wing on our list (Hunter) and McNeill has shown he may actually develop into another wing option. I still see it as a position of need.

Wood mentioned during the practise game that Bailey Smith may play wing this year. Wood said that Smith has played inbside all his life, but is beginning to appreciate how important the wings are.

I thought Lachie played ok last night. Not sure what his role was but seemed to be between wing and HFF

What did you like about his game? Or maybe what did he do differently to recent game time?

I agree. He was lively and didn’t fumble as much, but applied good pressure.

    This ^^

Plus he got more of the ball and hit targets to give other players use of the ball.

He's good at ground ball gets and being that link man. He does it with reasonable speed of body and mind too.

Hitting up the contest front on and linking with players flowing passed.

    Steady on

Nah, agree he played that role well.

He and West had low possession games but at high efficiency (mcsteal 13 @ 95% and 7 score involvements, West 13 @ 85% and 7 score involvements). I was happy with their games.

Coming on early in the match probably allowed him to get the tempo of the game and settle it in. A lot of subbing can’t be good for his development and despite the receding hairline he’s still young.

Very consistent. He deserves an extended run at it.
