Bankers & Anchors: Rnd 5, 2021 vs Gold Coast Suns

This is the round 5, 2021 edition of the weekly Bankers and Anchors thread. Once the game against Gold Coast is concluded post your nominations for:

The Bankers = 3 guys/aspects of the game that we banked on to do the right thing during the game
The Anchors = 3 guys/aspects of the game that weighed us down by their errors or poor play

Please limit it to no more than three of each player or aspect of the game, but feel free to make honourable/dishonourable mentions. As usual try to make it constructive criticism.

Try and restrict it to individual players rather than aspects of the overall match - I will allow more freedom now as the thread seems to be going down more of the aspects of the game path so you can have 3 for each made up of aspects of the game and individual players.

The thread is named in honour of a popular WOOF Contributor, The Banker, who passed away on 22/04/2012 after a six month battle with cancer.

    B

Beating three finalists from last year, while pummeling two shitters for percentage whilst undefeated
Sweet looks like he might be on the list for a while yet
11-0 run isn’t quite Essendon of 2019, but damn good fun

    A

    Third quarter
Some lack of professionalism by umpires. Don’t guess things.

Re: Bankers & Anchors: Rnd 5, 2021 vs Gold Coast Suns

    Bankers

1 Bailey Dale in defense was fantastic. I know he had a purple patch in a few games up forward in 2019, but this feels more important and impactful.
    2. Naughton's aerial work was a thing of beauty
    3. Bont leading the way early, and then again late to staunch Gold Coast's run.

    Anchors

1 Some poor goalkicking - especially Naughts.
    2. third quarter lapse
    3. that will do.

Re: Bankers & Anchors: Rnd 5, 2021 vs Gold Coast Suns

    Bankers:
    1. I would pay to watch Astronaught mark all day
    2. Bailey dale took some critical marks and stoppages
    3. We have so much depth, players can come in and play there part. Crozier was good today. Durey made some good stoppages today. Really like this work rate.

    4. Our tackling was fierce for the first 2 quarters
    5. Treloar kicking is surprising really good. 2 goals in the 2nd quarter and some of his field kicks naield them.

    6. Lipinski played his 50 game. Great achievement given the average game life for afl player is less than 50 games. Well done.

    Anchors:
    1. Our intensity still has lapses, and not just in the 3rd quarter. WE are now the hunted, so we cannot show any weakness or lapses in concentration, or our better opponents will torch us. When suns played on in 3rd quarter and moved the ball quicker, we got caught out. Letting a side kick 7 straight like GCS, shows there is still lots of improvement.

    2. We can play sublime footy ( 11 goals straight) to good footy to ordinary footy.

    3. Our goal kicking is still an issue, 17.16 , we could have kicked another 5 goals to tally to 21 goals.

    Bankers
    Sweet, not a bad debut
Dale, seems to have found his niche in defence.
    Naughton, great marking.

    Anchors
    Young to the ruck, unnecessary.
    Williams injury.
Lin Jong watching on, should be in the team.

    1. Treloar what an asset he is turning out to be.
    2. Naughton's marking
    3. Sweet debut with 31 hitouts

    Anchors

    1. Some really pathetic umpiring gifting 3 goals for nothing
    2. Team not working hard enough in the 3rd quarter
    3. Stadium entertainment and not showing the AFLW GF before the main game

Judging by Treloar's post game comments, he's buying in big time. He talked about how he sent Bont a message yesterday about the milestone. Ads still has Collingwood feels, but he's clearly enamoured with what is unfolding at the Dogs, and Marcus' leadership is a big part of it.
Can't wait though for Adz to stop referencing Collingwood, and just verbalising unequivocally how much he loves it here.

His referencing should be thank God they push me off that sinking ship!

    Bankers

    1. Dunkley - Essendon were mad for not giving up 2 of their 3 first rounders for this bloke. What a beast he is. Just keeps throwing himself at contest after contest.

    2. Bont - captains game today and earned 3 goals and possibly 3 Brownlow votes. 150th game and showed off at times. Bouncing the ball while Ellis is hot on his tail was darn right disrespectful. I love it.

    1. Sweet - 32 hitouts on debut albeit against a novice ruck, but he is also a novice ruck. If he can compete like that in the future we won't have to look far for Stef Martin's replacement

    Anchors

    1. Allowing Gold Coast so much uncontested ball picking their way through our defenses to kick 6 goals in the 3rd.

    2. Umpiring gift GC goals

    3. Wayward goal kicking again. We should've won by at least 80+

    4. Williams injury. We'll miss him terribly. Hopefully it's nothing serious

    Bankers
Always having talls to compete when the ball was kicked forward, the mids don't even need to overcomplicate it trying to kick to advantage, they just need to get it in and we're queueing up to take contested marks
Dominating the ruck, didn't expect that today with Stef out
    Macrae's delivery to leading forwards

    Anchors
Lachie Hunter tried to be too clever at times
Josh Bruce wanted to wrestle instead of taking a running jump or leading
    JJ's kicking hasn't improved
If you kicked five goals and Tom Boyd kicked five goals, Tom Boyd kicked more goals than you.

    Bankers

Dunkley - great courage and work rate
Dale and Duryea - good long kicking defenders.
    Sweet - solid debut
    Midfield - dominated.

    Anchors.
Gifting GC goals with ludicrous decisions
    Missed some easy shots
Bazlenka got goal hungry - twice!

    Commentator Anchor:

“ ‘Some people say the dogs have a soft draw”

    1. That’s you saying it, not ‘some people’

    2. In the first 6 rounds we have 3 finalists from last year, as well as 3 teams who played in a Grand Final in the last few years and another in a preliminary final.

That to me isn’t soft draw. We’ve simply beat the better teams to date and smashed the teams who we’ve needed to. So some people can go get *!*!*!*!ed.

Re: Bankers & Anchors: Rnd 5, 2021 vs Gold Coast Suns

    Bankers:

Bont - he was sublime. Clear BOG. The game was well in our control by the time he had 10 possessions and 2 goals about 13 minutes in.
Macrae - kicking is amazing. Just absolutely putting it on a platter for our forwards at times and has an insatiable appetite for getting the footy. He is making all of his team mates better.
BaileyDale - He's low flying at the moment. Every kick, mark and gather is clean and crisp.

    Anchors:

-Losing Williams. Huge loss. Such an important player to us and was going as good as any defender in the league. Spewing.
-A soft anchor for Timmy. Was playing on a second gamer 6 inches shorter than him and could have taking advantage of it better.
-I'm not going to go too hard at the 3rd quarter. I actually think the Suns kicked the ball exquisitely for a period there and really played well. But there was a bit of complacency that crept in and a few players running ahead of the contest too early.

    Bankers

    1. Sweet debut, very sweet.
    2. Bont's 150, Lippa's 50th, both great milestones
    3. We have great momentum going into two important games

    Anchors

    1. Umpiring in the 3rd was atrocious
    2. Scott, I just don't see it, McNeal is starting to win me over, he can stay in for now
    3. God we need a small crumbing forward

Re: Bankers & Anchors: Rnd 5, 2021 vs Gold Coast Suns

Which decisions in the third didn't woofers think were there?

I thought the English one was very soft - but otherwise don't recall too many issues.
The free against Wood was fair. At first look I disagreed, but once I saw the replay, you can clearly see Wood grabbed Corbett's hand and pull it over his shoulder.
