Dignified way of telling a premiership hero he's not going to be shortlisted and letting him control the narrative.

It's not a good role to take for a first time senior coach because it's most likely an interim role for 2 years before another coach is appointed. WC are making some progress this year but it's likely going to take a while before they push back into a top 8 side.

They've already overtaken North and started their rebuild later. I reckon WC can bounce quicker than most experts think, especially if they get someone like a Montgomery who has vast experience in the system and will implement high standards of performance from day 1.

Hmmm I dunno about that. Other than Reid and maybe Ginbey I still think they’re incredibly thin for young talent, and their best players are either over 30 (Kelly), can’t be relied on to stay fit (Allen) or both (Yeo, McGovern).

Literally, they are 2 games ahead of North in 2024 and started their rebuild later. I know progress isn't linear but most pundits would have expected North to be comfortably better than WC in 2024

Fair, but I just believe more in North’s list than West Coast’s. Their midfield future looks a ton brighter, they’ve done the hard part and found a super reliable key forward, and Xerri and Sheezel are already top flight players. They’ve definitely underperformed this year but it’s night and day compared to the Noble and Shaw teams.
West Coast on the other hand are about to lose Tom Barrass, and I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect McGovern to have another career best year with little to no interruption with another year of wear on his tyres. That’s a ton of shape lost behind the ball, which is easily their best area of the ground. I also just don’t see it with any of their young guys and think their performance this year, Reid going insane a couple of times notwithstanding, has been mostly carried by senior players who have been more or less bad since 2020. It makes it a real chance that they decline again next year.

I think with the amount of assistant coaches turning down the role West Coast already have their coach. Hinkley maybe.

Ditto for Gia, exactly the same reason given.

In all seriousness, dumb decisions if they are the real reason? It's a national comp and you go where you can get a job.

Re: Assistant Coaches
Surely you just take the first senior coaching job you can get. There?s finite jobs around and you can be waiting forever for a senior role.
Especially when your Gia or Hansen who haven?t been part of successful programs for a few years now (since they were at the dogs).
Football clubs can turn around very quickly. Really isn?t much difference between the make up of west coasts list now and where the pies were at when fly first came in.
On a side note, Is Adam Simpson likely to come back to vic? He?d be a very good get as an assistant or an operations position for a year or two before there is a vacancy for a senior coaching gig.
Good chance there will be a few opening next year. I reckon next year will have plenty of turnover.

Re: Assistant Coaches
In theory the 'take whatever they can get' is the right call but in the back of their minds they probably think they get just one chance.
They should back themselves though.

Re: Assistant Coaches
I interpreted those statements as 'i wasn't going to get the job so I'm staying in Melbourne for family reasons', not that the coaches were being picky.
