I think Carlton's list is decent *on paper* but a team is more about getting players on the list who look good on paper - see our 2016 premiership defensive unit made up mostly of ex-rookies, a DFA, a PSS pick and one lone guy who was drafted in the 40s.

No more excuses for Carlton. Zero. They've been failing for a long, long time and should have been better in the last few years.

If they can't make the 8 this year, they've got enormous problems.

Carlton are one of 8 teams who could finish between 5-12.

They have the talent and a very capable midfield for sure. Wouldn’t surprise me if they creep in.

It's going to be tough for them to make the eight. G_D is right, they're in that bracket of 6-8 teams who probably think they should be in the 5-8 spots.

St Kilda may improve, and Richmond may bounce. I really don't know what WCE will do, whilst Essendon will be premiers of the universe based on media coverage so it's hard to see which of those teams they can be better than. Then you have GWS who don't seem to want to drop.

People say year in year out Carlton should perform better than they are and should be making finals. I think the former is true, but making finals in an even competition is bloody hard.

There's always a few teams that "should" do better, and typically, many teams on their day kind of are better. All strive to be better each year. There's always 1 or 2 who suck. And there's always a couple who surprise. A lot of it comes down to winning a few close games and in particular, getting the season off to a good start and doing ok with injuries.

Lots of variables for any team. I'd been bullish about the dogs this year (and, kind of still am) but really accept that if we were to, say, lose the first 3-4 matches, or cop a couple of key injuries, then we maybe drop down to bottom half of the 8... maybe just miss. It's all possible. Just like it's possible for the Blues to take a few scalps early in the season, get on a run and get into the 8. Or Richmond to have another crack and win it... or Sydney to continue their improvement from last year (don't hear a lot about them)...
