I have several memories of him it seemed that every week in 1985 he'd do something extraordinary. But my favourite was at the MCG against Collingwood when it felt like a must win game was in the balance and we desperately needed the next goal. A Collingwood defender tried to handball to another defender but Lal appeared from nowhere, intercepted the ball and waddled into an open goal.

It was like he had trapdoors on the ground that he hid in until the ball got close and then he just jumped out from under them to make opposition players panic. Les Bamblett made quality defenders look silly on a weekly basis. Like BAD said it's a shame he only played for such a short time.
Most people I played against don’t like me and I don’t blame them. I’m quite frustrating

Shane O'Sullivan told me the story how he recruited him. Shane was in Perth signing up a whole lot of WA players and was looking for Les. Someone told him he was living in a caravan outside Perth, so Shane drove out there, knocked on the caravan door, and his girlfriend answered. She asked what he wanted, and he told her he wanted to make an offer to Les to play with Footscray. The girl friend immediately said, he will take it. Les didn't have a say in it.

Saw him turn it on in his first practice match for the club. Turned to my dad and said "Who the hell is he"?
