Not quite true, some wanted it addressed during the trade period last year.

Interestingly the article mentions Geelong has a heap of salary cap room!

The better your second ruck is at rucking the more time they can spend in it. It can be a weapon of a position if used properly.

We only use it sparingly because our choices suck so bad.

Playing 85% game time doesn't necessarily mean he is playing 85% game time in the ruck - nor does it mean that is the best division of his duties. At the moment it's happening out of necessity because in the other moments our ruck is Josh Bruce.

    Yes that’s true JD.

I guess I’m wondering without knowing the answer how important that second ruck role really is.

Darcy was pretty much a solo ruck other than a rest on the bench for Freo.

Richmond really only use Nankervis with Miller chopping out briefly.

Stanley Cats primarily with a Blicavs chop out about.

A lot of teams use around the same percentage as we do.

Melbourne are a big outlier of course, and that definitely aligns with your point around having that quality second ruck and clearly set them apart last season.

I think defence is our priority / defensive minded players rather than a guy like Lobb.

Bruce, Naughton, Lobb, Marra just can’t happen. We’d be destroyed on the rebound.

    Agree.

If we bring in Lobb I hope Lobb and Tim ruck something like 60/70 Tim 40/30 Lobb and when both on the ground and Lobb rucking Tim can be that tall marking option down the line, plus helping backline when our defence is being pummelled or up forward with Naughty mobile target around the ground….. I think playing both will open up different options we don’t currently have. If we can bring Lobb in without selling the farm and as long as he fits in with our group (cannot see why not) it could be good for us. Although Lobb is approaching 30 yo he is a wiry build and crossing fingers therefore less likely to breakdown than if he was a big unit.

What if having a mix of these guys at different times means we're more competitive when dealing with the high ball and give away less uncontested/ intercept marks in the forward fifty? Does the ball rebound out as quickly then?

    Good question Jee.

I’m not sure I mean we do have a mix of these guys now right?

I doubt you could play them all, so how much are we gaining, Lobb doesn’t even play second ruck presently.

With the current state of the side, I’d rather develop Darcy in that role and concentrate on strengthening our defence.

But sounds like the Lobbster is coming.

I'm happy to do that, but then we all get upset because we're wasting the Bont years or whatever.

We've never had tall defencive, ruck or forward depth and now we're on the precipice of having it for what seems to be a reasonable price people are shitting themselves and hand wringing over a mix nobody even knows will eventuate one way or another.

Just let it happen and if the players mentioned stay fit and are good enough to get a game we reap the rewards from it.

Fair enough, I’m certainly not worried about it just enjoying the discussion. I actually don’t know how valuable this second ruck role is when loads of sides seem to not really care about it too much. Legit asking if it makes that much difference. I’m all about the D.

    Ah..Defence.

Lobb comes, he’s going to be my avatar photoshopped into bttf knocking out Biff.
