Jones is a clear upgrade on all our existing batch of key defenders. If he puts the work in to get rock hard fit, he will structure us up so much better in 2023.
Lake was 30 in 2012
Jones is currently 31
Lake was elite for many years, Jones has been 'very good' for 2.
Add his time out of the game, I see this move as far more risky

I stand corrected, thought Lake was older than that. Jones has been a more than very good and for longer than 2 years. He might not have a longer or better body of work than Lake but he has been a high quality AFL key defender.

Maybe will wash the JJ compensation if he leaves via free agency.

At a guess Carlton will get compensated but I'm not convinced we will lose anything. He did after all retire.

Re: Early Trade Rumours for 2022
I'm not sure either Jones or JJ contracts will be sufficient to trigger compensation, but at the most we are talking third round picks.

Re: Early Trade Rumours for 2022
Paddy McCartin still unsigned. No real discussion or noise about an extension for him. Family, friends, whatever memories he still has of the first half of his twenties all waiting for him in Melbourne. Us with suddenly no players of any real quality over 190cms in the back line and apparently some open cap space.
I am once again asking for someone to do something to make the most obvious pairing since PTA and Daniel Day Lewis happen.

I think he would have a sense of owing the Swans for giving him a chance and there would have to be a significant difference in contract length and $$$ for him to contemplate leaving.

Re: Early Trade Rumours for 2022
I heard McCartin talk the other day and I would be surprised if he is looking to move. Seems to like it up there and is very appreciative for the opportunity he received. It's obviously still has some risks but he seems confident in himself.
Maybe for us the experience with the struggles Picken endured would have us being very cautious.
We probably should be having a talk to him.

So let’s give him that significant difference in contract length and dollars. It’s a far more enticing option than putting a Liam Jones shaped clamp on our rear tyre for 3 years.
Also, if all of that is true then why hasn’t he re-signed yet?

Yeah good on them. But lets offer him a good contract then. Sydney are arseholes who will steal any of our talent they think they can get their hands on, why should we make it easy for them to keep theirs? Especially when he fills a glaring need and is a free agent.
I should leave it alone but you're not right

Who could still make it if he’s just given an extended run in the firsts.
