Any deal over 3 years is high risk regardless who the player is as you don't know what is around the corner.
True. Though we were able to offload Hunter. Whilst we are contributing part of his salary we have still made room and gotten him off our books. Not doing the deal would have meant missing years 1 and 2 from the deal.

Brayshaw moved to half back for half the season and was outstanding there. Why they moved him back into the centre with his concussion history, I'll never know.

We benefitted from Collingwood's LT Treloar deal.
Treloar and Grundy have been disasters for Collingwood.

    It was low risk.

It hasn't worked out...that's life. Who could have foreseen ANY of this?

I remember when he was 16 there was a worry he was a bit of a lad. Matured from that and now appears to have gone backwards. Sad.

In the past the season launch allocated a player to tables. Over the years had some great players sit on our table. One year we had Hunter, and found him very unfriendly and looked like he didn't want to be there. People on the table tried to talk to him, but couldn't really strike up a conversation. Make of it what you want, but as AFL players, one job is to engage with supporters.

If you are big into racehorses and gambling it can be distracting.

That's my point. I said in my post at the time Hunter was low risk due to his on field success.

Long term contracts are the perfect recipe for unforeseen circumstance and disaster.

5 year deals are the longest I'd go and then it would be only for a very select few Bontempelli, Naughton and in the future likely Darcy, JUH.

I'd be very hesitant to sign English or B.Smith on anything longer than a 3 year deal.
More of an In Bruges guy?
